The International Maritime Organization IMO convened at its 137th regular session in London on 6–10 July 2026. A particular focus was on the need to protect seafarers and the freedom of merchant shipping. The Council also decided on a number of questions related to the administration and strategic development of the IMO.

19.12.2024 | Fairway dues will be raised as of 1 January 2025. The dues were halved in 2015 under temporary legislation.

23.9.2024 | Fairway dues will be again collected in full from 2025 onwards. They were halved in 2015 under temporary legislation.

13.6.2024 | The Ministry of Transport and Communications requests comments on the Government’s draft proposal to Parliament for an act amending the Act on Fairway Dues. 

14.12.2023 | According to the Government Programme, the halving of fairway dues will be made a permanent practice. The change will take place in two stages.

25.4.2024 | The Ministry of Transport and Communications has launched a legislative project to restart the collection of fairway dues in full from 2025 onwards.

9.10.2023 | In accordance with the Government Programme of Prime Minister Petteri Orpo, the Ministry of Transport and Communications has started preparations to make the halving of fairway dues permanent. 

22.1.2024 | A plan has been drawn up to turn the temporary halving of fairway dues into a permanent arrangement in line with the Government Programme. The change would boost the competitiveness of Finland's foreign trade.

The new regulations would enter into force at the beginning of 2023.

The deadline for submitting comments is 1 September 2023. Alongside this, the Ministry is launching a project to amend the Act on Fairway Dues in order to make the halving of the fairway dues permanent.

23.3.2023 | On 23 March 2023, the President of the Republic approved the new Pilotage Act. The aim of the Act is to ensure maritime safety in Finnish waters.

24.11.2022 | A forum for sustainable maritime trade, convened by Minister of Transport and Communications Timo Harakka and Minister of Economic Affairs Mika Lintilä, will take place on 24 November 2022. The forum aims to generate discussion on the challenges and opportunities of the green transition in maritime logistics for Finland.
