Minister of Transport and Communications Lulu Ranne and Minister of Economic Affairs Sakari Puisto hosted a roundtable discussion on the competitiveness and security of Finland’s ports on 7 April 2026.

A round table discussion on port safety and security took place on 11 December 2025 at the invitation of Minister of Transport and Communications Lulu Ranne and Minister of the Interior Mari Rantanen. The meeting focussed on the security situation in Finnish ports and how they might be impacted by changes taking place in the operating environment.

19.12.2024 | Fairway dues will be raised as of 1 January 2025. The dues were halved in 2015 under temporary legislation.

16.7.2024 | The European Commission awarded EUR 39.11 million in funding under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) to 11 projects in Finland. Five central government projects received a total of EUR 20.16 million and six private sector projects a total of EUR 18.96 million in funding.

10.4.2024 | The Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) is defined in the new Regulation on European Union guidelines for the development of the TEN-T network. The regulation also lays down provisions on the quality requirements for the network corridors and transport nodes. On 10 April 2024, the Ministry of Transport and Communications published maps showing Finland’s TEN-T network in accordance with the new Regulation.

24.1.2024 | Finland has successfully applied for EU funding from the European Commission, which awarded EUR 39.45 million from the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) to seven military mobility projects in Finland. As the sum applied for was EUR 43.16 million, this call for proposals was a great success for Finland.

7.9.2023 | On 7 September 2023, the Government issued a proposal to Parliament for adopting an international code of safety for ships carrying industrial personnel. The proposal included its enforcement as well as the implementation of the amended directive on stability requirements. 

19.12.2023 | Representatives of the EU Member States, Parliament and Commission have reached a provisional accord on a regulation concerning Union guidelines for developing the trans-European transport network (TEN-T). The regulation will define the TEN-T network, legislating on such aspects as quality requirements for highways and transport nodes. The accord was achieved in tripartite negotiations on 18 December 2023.

21.12.2022 | A total of EUR 25.13 million was granted to Finland by the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) for a Transport Military Mobility project. Finland received the support it had applied for the road connections at Rissala airport, i.e. the project on highway 9 in Kelttu, Siilinjärvi.

19.10.2022 | The Czech Presidency of the Council of the EU is hosting an informal meeting of EU transport ministers in Prague on 20-21 October. In the meeting, Finland will be represented by Minister of Transport and Communications Timo Harakka. It will be an informal meeting where no decisions are taken.

30.9.2021 | The Government submitted four Union communications to Parliament on 30 September 2021 concerning legislative proposals for transport. These communications address the tightening of CO2 emission limits for motor vehicles, development of a distribution infrastructure for alternative fuels, and an increase in the use of alternative fuels in aviation and maritime transport.

22.6.2022 | The preparations for the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) will continue in July under the Czech Presidency of the Council of the European Union. The preparations have advanced well and from Finland's point of view the work will lay a good groundwork for the regulatory drafting in the matter.

22.2.2022 | An informal meeting of the European Union transport ministers was held in Le Bourget, France, on 21-22 February 2022. Minister of Transport and Communications Timo Harakka and High-Level Representative Mikael Nyberg represented Finland at the meeting.

15.7.2021 | Finland's EU funding applications have been successful. A total of EUR 10.9m in Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) funding was granted by the EU for three transport projects.
