Minister of Transport and Communications Lulu Ranne and Minister of Economic Affairs Sakari Puisto hosted a roundtable discussion on the competitiveness and security of Finland’s ports on 7 April 2026.

A round table discussion on port safety and security took place on 11 December 2025 at the invitation of Minister of Transport and Communications Lulu Ranne and Minister of the Interior Mari Rantanen. The meeting focussed on the security situation in Finnish ports and how they might be impacted by changes taking place in the operating environment.

16.7.2024 | The European Commission awarded EUR 39.11 million in funding under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) to 11 projects in Finland. Five central government projects received a total of EUR 20.16 million and six private sector projects a total of EUR 18.96 million in funding.

10.4.2024 | The Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) is defined in the new Regulation on European Union guidelines for the development of the TEN-T network. The regulation also lays down provisions on the quality requirements for the network corridors and transport nodes. On 10 April 2024, the Ministry of Transport and Communications published maps showing Finland’s TEN-T network in accordance with the new Regulation.

24.1.2024 | Finland has successfully applied for EU funding from the European Commission, which awarded EUR 39.45 million from the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) to seven military mobility projects in Finland. As the sum applied for was EUR 43.16 million, this call for proposals was a great success for Finland.

19.12.2023 | Representatives of the EU Member States, Parliament and Commission have reached a provisional accord on a regulation concerning Union guidelines for developing the trans-European transport network (TEN-T). The regulation will define the TEN-T network, legislating on such aspects as quality requirements for highways and transport nodes. The accord was achieved in tripartite negotiations on 18 December 2023.

19.12.2024 | Fairway dues will be raised as of 1 January 2025. The dues were halved in 2015 under temporary legislation.

30.9.2021 | The Government submitted four Union communications to Parliament on 30 September 2021 concerning legislative proposals for transport. These communications address the tightening of CO2 emission limits for motor vehicles, development of a distribution infrastructure for alternative fuels, and an increase in the use of alternative fuels in aviation and maritime transport.

The draft has been modified based on initial comments, and the requirements for ports and the authorities have been relaxed. 29.4.2021 | The Government proposes amendments to the Act on Environmental Protection in Maritime Transport. The aim is to improve the reception of waste in ports. In a key amendment, the obligation to receive waste from vessels would be expanded to coastal and inland marinas with 25-49 berths. The Government presented its proposal to the Parliament on 29 April 2021.

15.7.2021 | Finland's EU funding applications have been successful. A total of EUR 10.9m in Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) funding was granted by the EU for three transport projects.

16.12.2021 | The Finnish Government and other operators are applying for a total of EUR 185 million in financial support for 22 transport projects from the EU's Connecting Europe Facility (CEF). Half of these are the Government's projects, and half are projects of other operators. The Ministerial Finance Committee approved the applications on 16 December 2021.
