  6. A Finnish-led project has applied for EUR 9.55 million in European Commission funding to reinforce subsea cable repair capacity. The project is coordinated by the Finnish National Emergency Supply Agency and involves partners from Finland, Sweden and Estonia. The Ministerial Finance Committee decided in favour of the proposal on 16 April 2026.

  8. Finnish operators apply for a total of EUR 13.76 million in funding from the European Commission’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) for seven communications projects.   9. The European Commission has selected communications projects to receive funding from the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF). In the fourth round of calls for proposals under the CEF Digital programme, five projects coordinated by Finnish operators received a total of around EUR 4.67 million in funding. In addition, funding was awarded to a Swedish submarine cable project that is partly placed in Finland.

  10. The Legal Committee of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) met in London on 24–28 March 2025. The meeting discussed measures to prevent illegal operations by vessels belonging to the shadow fleet. The Committee approved a proposal co-sponsored by Finland and many other countries to conduct a Regulatory Scoping Exercise to further develop actions to prevent unlawful operations in the maritime sector.

Slutresultatet av sessionen blev magert när det gäller växthusgasutsläppen. Staterna nådde dock samförstånd om två åtgärder för att minska sjötransporternas miljökonsekvenser för Medelhavet.

  13. 26.1.2026 | On 26 January 2026, Finland and 13 other European countries published a letter to the International Maritime Community on the safety and security risks caused by Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) interference. The signatories of the letter include the coastal states of the Baltic Sea and the North Sea: Finland, Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Sweden and the United Kingdom as well as Iceland.

  16. 14.5.2019 | Kommunikationsministeriet har skickat på remiss förslag till lagar genom vilka Finland föreslås tillträda HNS-konventionen om ansvar och ersättning för skada i samband med sjötransporter. Om konventionen ratificeras ökar fartygsägarnas ansvar vid sjötransport av farliga och skadliga ämnen och de skadelidande tryggas snabbare ersättning med större omfattning.

  17. 16.10.2025 | The Ministry of Transport and Communications is preparing a long-term investment programme, based on the Government Programme, to renew Finland’s icebreaking fleet. In addition, Sanna Ruuskanen, Director of Unit at the Ministry of Transport and Communications, will be appointed as a new member of the Board of Directors of Arctia Ltd, Finland’s state-owned icebreaking company.

  20. 30.12.2024 | On 30 December 2024, the President of the Republic of Finland ratified amendments to the Act on Environmental Protection in Maritime Transport and the related acts. The amendments implement the Government Programme, EU regulations and regulations of the International Maritime Organisation IMO.
