20.11.2019 | On 22 November 2019, the Ministry of Transport and Communications circulated the draft Act on Electronic Communication Services for comments. Among other things, the legislative reform aims to promote the availability of broadband networks and communications services as well as the consumer rights and the accessibility of the services.

17.3.2015 | The Ministry of Transport and Communications proposes to have the universal service broadband speed doubled to 2Mb/s from the start of November in 2015. A long-term goal is to increase this speed to 10 Mb/s by 2021. A mid-term evaluation would be performed in 2017. Minister of Education and Communications Krista Kiuru requested in October 2014 the Finnish Communications Regulatory Authority to map the market situation of the universal service and the speeds available for citizens.

This means that a broadband access will be included in basic communications services like telephone or postal services. As of the beginning of July telecom operators defined as universal service providers must be able to provide every permanent residence and business office with access to a reasonably priced and high-quality connection with a downstream rate of at least 1 Mbit/s.

The Government gave the proposal to the Parliament on Thursday, 11 June 2020.
