  6. 11.2.2026 | VR-Group Plc and Suomen Ostoliikennekalusto Oy announced today that they have signed an asset purchase agreement concerning the rolling stock used in passenger rail services funded by the government. The rolling stock will be transferred to Suomen Ostoliikennekalusto's ownership from the beginning of March.

  7. 24.10.2025 | The Ministry of Transport and Communications has submitted draft decrees concerning the fees charged for the services provided by the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom, the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency, and the Finnish Meteorological Institute for comments. These decrees would replace the current ones, which will expire on 31 December 2025.

  8. 13.11.2025 | The Government proposes that the President of the Republic approve amendments to the Rail Transport Act and the Act on Transport Services on 14 November 2025. The amendments will enhance the safety and security of urban rail transport and allow more time to procure rolling stock that meets EU requirements for use in the forest and chemicals industries.

  14. 12.6.2025 | On 12 June 2025, the Government submitted a proposal to Parliament to amend the Act on Transport Services. The proposal would grant municipalities, joint municipal and other regional authorities the possibility to arrange passenger train services in their regions. It would also put in grounds to make changes to the regional competence on local rail transport.

  15. 16.6.2025 | On 16 June 2025, the Ministerial Committee on Economic Policy decided that the central government would continue its preparations for the competitive tendering of publicly funded passenger rail services. The current contract with VR Group is due to expire at the end of 2030, with a new contract period of about ten years scheduled to start on 1 January 2031.

  16. 7.5.2026 | On 7 May 2026, the Government submitted for approval amendments to the Act on Transport Services, the Driving Licence Act, the Act on the Organisation of Driver Examinations and the Act on the Enforcement of a Fine. The amendments aim to improve the operating conditions for the transport sector. Most of the acts and the amended decree will enter into force on 15 May 2026.

  18. 27.6.2025 | On 27 June 2025, the President of the Republic approved temporary amendments to the Act on Transport Services, which will enter into force on 1 July 2025. The purpose is to bring data on publicly supported passenger transport services in Northern Finland into one place.

  19. 20.5.2025 | The Ministerial Committee on Economic Policy decided on 20 May 2025 to fully finance flight connections between six regional airports and Helsinki up to 27 February 2028. Air connections to the city of Savonlinna, however, will be funded out of government funds up to 50 per cent only. The decision is based on the spring 2026 government discussion on spending limits.
