The Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) met in London from 18 to 22 May 2026 for their 111th session.

On 13 November 2024, the Ministry of Transport and Communications published the national programme on the distribution infrastructure for alternative fuels. The programme, which was drawn up in broad-based cooperation with stakeholders, facilitates the implementation of EU regulation.

The Ministry of Transport and Communications requests statements on the draft national programme on alternative transport fuels distribution infrastructure. Comments can be submitted until 8 September 2024.

16.10.2025 | The Ministry of Transport and Communications is preparing a long-term investment programme, based on the Government Programme, to renew Finland’s icebreaking fleet. In addition, Sanna Ruuskanen, Director of Unit at the Ministry of Transport and Communications, will be appointed as a new member of the Board of Directors of Arctia Ltd, Finland’s state-owned icebreaking company.

27.6.2025 | The Ministry of Transport and Communications is inviting comments on a draft government proposal for a new act on scrapping premiums for passenger cars for the years 2026–2027. The deadline for submitting comments is 5 August 2025.

11.3.2026 | Finland’s Ministry of Transport and Communications published a Joint Nordic Strategy for Transport System Preparedness on 11 March 2026. The strategy was handed over to the Nordic transport ministers in Rovaniemi where the ministers also issued a joint statement. As part of their meeting, the ministers will also visit the multinational Cold Response 26 military exercise in Lapland on 12 March 2026.

12.2.2026 | On 12 February 2026, the Government submitted three communications concerning proposals included in the European Commission’s Automotive Package to Parliament. On 30 January 2026, the Government also submitted a Europe communication regarding the Commission’s proposal to amend the EU Regulation on the CO2 emissions standards for heavy-duty vehicles.

17.12.2025 | On 16 December 2025, the European Commission published the Automotive Package to promote the automotive industry’s competitiveness and support the transition to clean vehicles. The package includes several legislative proposals.

27.11.2025 | On 27 November 2025, the Government proposed approval of a fixed-term act on scrapping premiums for passenger cars. The act will enter into force on 1 January 2026. Applications for a scrapping premium may be submitted to the Transport and Communications Agency Traficom after the entry into force of the proposed act.

17.12.2025 | Euroopan komissio on julkaissut 16.12.2025 niin sanotun autoteollisuuspaketin, jonka tavoitteena on edistää autoteollisuuden kilpailukykyä ja tukea siirtymää puhtaisiin ajoneuvoihin. Paketti sisältää useita lainsäädäntöehdotuksia.

17.12.2025 | Europeiska kommissionen har den 16 december 2025 publicerat ett så kallat bilindustripaket som syftar till att främja bilindustrins konkurrenskraft och stödja övergången till rena fordon. Paketet innehåller flera lagstiftningsförslag.

22.9.2025 | On 22 September 2025, the Government submitted to Parliament a legislative proposal concerning a fixed-term scrapping premium for passenger cars. Scrapping premiums could be applied for concerning the period 1 October 2025–31 December 2027. Applications could be submitted when the act is in force. The act is proposed to enter into force on 1 January 2026.

12.2.2026 | Valtioneuvosto antoi eduskunnalle 12.2.2026 kolme kirjelmää, jotka koskevat Euroopan komission autoteollisuuspakettiin sisältyneitä ehdotuksia. Valtioneuvosto on antanut myös 30.1.2026 eduskunnalle E-kirjeen, joka koskee komission ehdotusta raskaan kaluston CO2-raja-arvoasetuksen muuttamisesta.

12.2.2026 | Statsrådet lämnade den 12 februari 2026 tre skrivelser till riksdagen om förslagen i Europeiska kommissionens fordonsindustripaket. Statsrådet har också den 30 januari 2026 överlämnat ett E-brev till riksdagen som gäller kommissionens förslag till ändring av förordningen om gränsvärden för koldioxidutsläpp från tunga fordon.

3.12.2025 | The EU Transport and Telecommunications Council will meet in Brussels on 4 and 5 December 2025. Minister of Transport and Communications Lulu Ranne will represent Finland at the meeting.

27.5.2025 | On 5 March 2025, the European Commission gave two Communications: one on an industrial action plan for the European automotive sector and one on the decarbonisation of corporate fleets. The Ministry of Transport and Communications informed the Parliament of Finland of the Action Plan for the automotive industry on 9 May 2025 and of the Communication on the decarbonisation of corporate fleets on 26 May 2025.

13.5.2025 | Transport ministers of Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden and Denmark will meet on 13–14 May 2025 in Helsinki. They will issue a joint statement on military mobility and security of supply.

28.4.2025 | On 21 February 2025, the European Commission and the EU High Representative issued a Joint Communication on an EU Action Plan on Cable Security concerning submarine cables. The Ministry of Transport and Communications will inform Parliament of the action plan on 25 april 2025.

21.3.2025 | Minister of Transport and Communications Lulu Ranne attended the European Shipping Summit seminar in Brussels on 20 March 2025. The seminar brought together European and international decision-makers, authorities and actors in the shipping industry.
