Following complex negotiations and a rare vote, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) decided to postpone the final adoption of the long-discussed regulation package on maritime transport emissions by at least one year. The decision means that the proposed regulation will not come into force as originally scheduled in March 2027.

14.1.2015 | The Ministry of Transport and Communications has submitted a dissenting opinion to a report by the data acquisition working group of the Ministry of Defence. The Ministry cannot fully share the views expressed in the report, nor can it agree with all of the proposed further measures put forward in it. Some of the proposed measures violate citizens' fundamental rights and can weaken the possibilities of companies to do business.

13.10.2025 | To support the preparation of the project "Security and new economic growth from information networks" (TUUTTI), the Ministry of Transport and Communications invited comments on the project's key needs and themes. The consultation was open from 19 June to 31 August 2025.  On 13 October 2025, the Ministry published a summary of the 33 comments received.

27.6.2025 | On 27 June 2025, the President of the Republic approved temporary amendments to the Act on Transport Services, which will enter into force on 1 July 2025. The purpose is to bring data on publicly supported passenger transport services in Northern Finland into one place.

16.4.2025 | A proposal on temporary amendments to the Act on Transport Services was submitted to Parliament by the Government. The aim is to centralise data on publicly supported passenger transport services in one and the same place.

27.5.2025 | On 5 March 2025, the European Commission gave two Communications: one on an industrial action plan for the European automotive sector and one on the decarbonisation of corporate fleets. The Ministry of Transport and Communications informed the Parliament of Finland of the Action Plan for the automotive industry on 9 May 2025 and of the Communication on the decarbonisation of corporate fleets on 26 May 2025.

4.6.2025 | The EU Transport and Telecommunications Council will convene in Luxembourg from 5 to 6 June 2025. Minister of Transport and Communications Lulu Ranne will represent Finland at the meeting.

20.12.2024 | Euroopan komissio on päättänyt Sanoma Media Finland Oy:n tekemän Yleisradio Oy:n saamaa valtiontukea koskevan kantelun käsittelyn Euroopan unionissa. Päätöksen mukaan Ylen saama valtiontuki on EU:n valtiontukisääntöjen mukaisesti olemassa olevaa tukea, eikä komissio edellytä Suomelta muutoksia lainsäädäntöön.

7.11.2024 | On 7 November 2024, the Government granted radio programme licences for a new nationwide frequency block 26, and for 20 individual frequencies in a supplementary application round. Licences were issued to different parts of Finland, including to local radio broadcasting operators.

20.12.2024 | Europeiska kommissionen har avslutat behandlingen i Europeiska unionen av Sanoma Media Finland Oy:s klagomål över Rundradion Ab:s statliga stöd. Enligt beslutet ska det statliga stöd som Rundradion får betraktas som befintligt stöd enligt EU:s regler om statligt stöd, varför kommissionen inte förutsätter att Finland ändrar sin lagstiftning.

13.11.2024 | New trilateral arrangement formalizes collaboration on the production of Arctic and polar icebreakers

16.12.2024 | The Ministry of Transport and Communications requests comments on a draft government proposal for temporarily amending the Act on Transport Services. The proposal aims to centralise data on publicly supported passenger transport services in one place to make the data more accessible. The deadline for submitting comments is 5 February 2025.

18.10.2024 | On 18 October 2024, Minister of Transport, Communications and the Interior Lulu Ranne signed a decision to alter the composition of Arctia Ltd’s board of directors. A new special assignment for Arctia will also be incorporated into the company’s articles of association.

13.11.2024 | On 13 November 2024, the Ministry of Transport and Communications published the national programme on the distribution infrastructure for alternative fuels. The programme, which was drawn up in broad-based cooperation with stakeholders, facilitates the implementation of EU regulation.

12.9.2024 | A parliamentary working group tasked with assessing the public service duties and funding of the Finnish Broadcasting Company (YLE) published its report on 12 September 2024. The working group proposed cuts to YLE's funding and amendments to Act on the Finnish Broadcasting Company concerning transparency and security of supply.
