On 24 August 2023, the Government submitted Union communications to Parliament on the European Commission's proposals for amendments to the so-called maritime transport package.

On 1 September 2026, the Government of Prime Minister Petteri Orpo reached a decision on its budget proposal for 2027 and is steadily implementing the agenda it agreed at the spending limits session. The agenda includes EUR 100 million of investment in construction and numerous transport infrastructure projects. The Government’s targeted measures will support economic growth.

18.12.2025 | The Government adopted the National Transport System Plan for 2026–2037 and submitted it in the form of a report to Parliament on 18 December 2025.

16.10.2025 | The Ministry of Transport and Communications is preparing a long-term investment programme, based on the Government Programme, to renew Finland’s icebreaking fleet. In addition, Sanna Ruuskanen, Director of Unit at the Ministry of Transport and Communications, will be appointed as a new member of the Board of Directors of Arctia Ltd, Finland’s state-owned icebreaking company.

13.10.2025 | The Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) will meet in London on 14–17 October 2025. The extraordinary session of the Committee is to decide on historic and globally binding measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from shipping.

10.4.2024 | The Ministry of Transport and Communications has joined as a founding member to the Data Spaces Alliance Finland cooperation network. 16.4.2025 | On 16 April 2025, the Government submitted a proposal to Parliament to amend the Act on the Finnish Broadcasting Company (Yle). The proposed amendments will implement the legislative changes outlined by the parliamentary working group on Yle. The proposal also incorporates the criteria and procedures for the appointment and dismissal of managers of public service media required by the European Media Freedom Act (EMFA).

27.6.2025 | On 27 June 2025, the President of the Republic approved amendments to the Act on the Finnish Broadcasting Company Yle. The amendments will implement the legislative changes outlined by the parliamentary working group on Yle. They also incorporate the criteria and procedures for the appointment and dismissal of the management of public service media providers required by the European Media Freedom Act (EMFA). The legislative amendments will enter into force on 8 August 2025.

20.9.2021 | Addressing the Transport and Communications Forum on 20 September 2021, Minister of Transport and Communications Timo Harakka insisted that Finland is ideally positioned to succeed in a climate-neutral Europe: "We understand the power of partnership, and we have the opportunity and even the duty to apply the tools at our disposal."

28.1.2025 | The working group that examined impact assessment capability in the administrative branch of the Ministry of Transport and Communications and its development has completed its work. The working group defined a target state of impact assessment capability and priorities for the development and created a framework for the evaluation and development of impact assessment capability.
