The Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom has completed the Port State Control (PSC) inspection of the Eagle S and detained the ship.

Finland is actively involved in international efforts to keep shipping and the marine environment safe in the Baltic Sea.

A Finnish-led project has applied for EUR 9.55 million in European Commission funding to reinforce subsea cable repair capacity. The project is coordinated by the Finnish National Emergency Supply Agency and involves partners from Finland, Sweden and Estonia. The Ministerial Finance Committee decided in favour of the proposal on 16 April 2026.

Finnish operators apply for a total of EUR 13.76 million in funding from the European Commission’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) for seven communications projects. In addition, four Swedish projects are partly placed in Finland. The Ministerial Finance Committee decided in favour of the applications on 30 January 2025.

26.1.2026 | On 26 January 2026, Finland and 13 other European countries published a letter to the International Maritime Community on the safety and security risks caused by Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) interference. The signatories of the letter include the coastal states of the Baltic Sea and the North Sea: Finland, Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Sweden and the United Kingdom as well as Iceland.

The European Commission has selected communications projects to receive funding from the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF). In the fourth round of calls for proposals under the CEF Digital programme, five projects coordinated by Finnish operators received a total of around EUR 4.67 million in funding. In addition, funding was awarded to a Swedish submarine cable project that is partly placed in Finland.

The Legal Committee of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) met in London on 24–28 March 2025. The meeting discussed measures to prevent illegal operations by vessels belonging to the shadow fleet. The Committee approved a proposal co-sponsored by Finland and many other countries to conduct a Regulatory Scoping Exercise to further develop actions to prevent unlawful operations in the maritime sector.

28.4.2025 | On 21 February 2025, the European Commission and the EU High Representative issued a Joint Communication on an EU Action Plan on Cable Security concerning submarine cables. The Ministry of Transport and Communications will inform Parliament of the action plan on 25 april 2025.

30.6.2025 | The Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) met in London from 18 to 27 June 2025 for their 110th session.

4.4.2025 | Permanent Secretary of the Finnish Ministry of Transport and Communications Minna Kivimäki will visit Copenhagen on 7–9 April 2025. 

3.7.2025 | The European Commission has awarded EUR 91.01 million under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) to nine projects in Finland. Of this, around EUR 59.60 million will go to government initiatives.

21.5.2025 | Cyprus and Finland are EU partners with strong maritime traditions and a shared interest in the advancement of European and global efforts to ensure that the future of maritime transport will be sustainable, safe, resilient and competitive.

5.5.2025 | Minister for Foreign Affairs Elina Valtonen, Minister of Transport and Communications Lulu Ranne and Director General of the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom Jarkko Saarimäki will meet Secretary-General of International Telecommunications Union Doreen Bogdan-Martin in Helsinki on 6 May 2025.

12.2.2025 | Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transport and Communications Minna Kivimäki, together with the Ministry’s senior public officials, is visiting Brussels on 11–13 February 2025 to influence various EU processes.

13.11.2024 | On 13 November 2024, the Ministry of Transport and Communications published the national programme on the distribution infrastructure for alternative fuels. The programme, which was drawn up in broad-based cooperation with stakeholders, facilitates the implementation of EU regulation.

7.10.2024 | The Marine Environment Protection Committee of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) met in London between 30 September and 4 October 2024. The 82nd session of the Committee continued negotiations on global measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from marine transport. Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transport and Communications Minna Kivimäki attended the session on 30 September–2 October 2024.

18.10.2024 | On 18 October 2024, Minister of Transport, Communications and the Interior Lulu Ranne signed a decision to alter the composition of Arctia Ltd’s board of directors. A new special assignment for Arctia will also be incorporated into the company’s articles of association.
