On 17-22 September, Minister of Communications Suvi Lindén will visit New York to participate in a meeting of the UN Broadband Commission and a Summit on the UN Millennium Development Goals.

Established in May, the mission of the Broadband Commission for Digital Development is to seek ways to extend the coverage of communications technology and broadband connections to the developing countries so as to promote the achievement of the UN Millennium Development Goals.

The MDGs, jointly adopted by the UN member states, aim at eradicating poverty, ensuring primary education for all, and reducing child mortality, to single out a few themes. The Broadband Commission will present its recommendation for action to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on 19 September.

Ms Lindén will attend the Summit on the UN Millennium Development Goals as a member of the delegation led by President of the Republic Tarja Halonen.

Minister Lindén has also been invited to join the advisory board of the Digital Health Initiative whose purpose is to discuss the UN and WHO digital health services. The advisory board will convene in New York on 21 September, and on the same day, Ms Lindén will participate as a speaker in a high-level seminar on digital health services.
