16.10.2023 | The EU ministers responsible for the environment and climate change issues will meet in Luxembourg on 16 October to discuss the EU’s objectives for the negotiations at the UN Climate Change Conference to be held in Dubai. The conclusions to be adopted by the Environment Council will constitute the EU’s objective for the Climate Change Conference. Finland’s representative at the Environment Council will be Minister of Climate and the Environment Kai Mykkänen.

16.12.2020 | On 17 December, the EU environment and climate ministers will meet in Brussels to finalise the EU’s climate commitment to the Secretariat of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. Finland’s representative at the meeting will be Minister of the Environment and Climate Change Krista Mikkonen.

5.2.2026 | European route 16, E16, will be extended to Finland. The Finnish Government gave a decree on the matter on 5 February 2026. The decree will enter into force on 5 March 2026.

16.9.2010 | On 17-22 September, Minister of Communications Suvi Lindén will visit New York to participate in a meeting of the UN Broadband Commission and a Summit on the UN Millennium Development Goals.

10.5.2010 | The International Telecommunications Union, ITU, and the United Nations Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organisation, UNESCO, have set up a high-level Broadband Commission for Digital Development. Members to the Commission have been invited from among opinion leaders representing governments and commercial and industrial life.

3.10.2025 | On 3 October 2025, the President of the Republic approved an amendment to the international agreement on European roads (AGR) by which European route 16, E16, can be extended to the Finnish side. The Ministry of Transport and Communications has launched a legislative project for the national implementation of extending E16 to Finland.

15.7.2025 | The Council of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) met for its 134th session in London on 7–11 July 2025. Finland has been a member of the Council during the current term 2024–2025.

27.9.2024 | Finland has joined the US-led multilateral declaration on submarine cable security. The parties to the declaration agreed on common objectives and means for improving the security and resilience of submarine cables.

16.5.2024 | The Ministry of Transport and Communications has published its third sustainability report. It contains information on the measures taken by the Ministry to promote the achievement of the UN’s Agenda 2030 Sustainable Development Goals in 2023. 

30.9.2024 | The Marine Environment Protection Committee of the International Maritime Organization convenes in London from 30 September to 4 October 2024. The 82nd session of the Committee continues the negotiations on global actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from shipping. The topics include the package of a possible fuel standard and a price for carbon emissions. Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transport and Communications Minna Kivimäki attends the session on 30 September–2 October 2024.

18.4.2024 | The Government gave a proposal to Parliament by which the amendments to the Road Traffic Convention would be approved and brought into force. The main objective of the amendments is to coordinate the International Road Traffic Convention with the current UN Regulations concerning lighting devices.

24.11.2023 | The Ministry of Transport and Communications has published a vision for an accessible transport system. The vision defines the aims for the development of the accessibility of the transport system throughout Finland.

6.5.2022 | The Ministry of Transport and Communications has published its first responsibility report. The report contains information on the measures taken by the Ministry of Transport and Communications to promote the achievement of the UN's 2030 Agenda Sustainable Development Goals in 2021.
