Permanent Secretary Kivimäki to attend IMO Council meeting

The Council of the International Maritime Organisation, IMO, will meet for its 133rd session in London from 18 to 22 November. Permanent Secretary Minna Kivimäki will attend the meeting on 18–20 November 2024.

Items on the agenda include IMO risk detection and management and updating of IMO codes of conduct. Finland is a Member of the IMO Council for 2024–2025 and seeks to be re-elected for the term 2026–2027.

During the visit, Kivimäki will meet representatives of several small island developing states, Central American states and Caribbean states to discuss the topical issues in international maritime transport and regulation. Kivimäki will meet Kaylene Dale, Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Maritime Safety Authority.

In connection with the meeting, Kivimäki will give a speech about the expertise needed in the maritime transport sector and the importance of high-quality training and education.

“To attract skilled employees, attention must be paid to the working conditions and equality in the sector. In addition, high-quality training and education are needed, and we in Finland are happy to share our good experiences”, Kivimäki says.

The IMO Council will next meet in London on 7–11 July 2025.
