6.11.2025 | The Assembly of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) will elect a new Council for the forthcoming two-year term in November-December. Finland is seeking re-election to the Council. The Ministry of Transport and Communications has invited Finnish maritime education institutions to serve as advisers to the Finnish delegation at the Assembly. Finnish maritime education is a sought-after export to various parts of the world. 

30.9.2025 | Almost 200 persons and eight organisations participated in the national cyber exercise of the security authorities organised at the Jyväskylä University of Applied Sciences (Jamk) on 22–26 September 2025.

2.9.2025 | The Government of Prime Minister Petteri Orpo has reached a decision on its budget proposal for 2026. The Government’s decisions aim to support economic growth, which is picking up. Supporting economic growth and continuing responsible fiscal management is necessary to ensure the security of people in Finland and safeguard their access to important services going forward.

19.5.2025 | A national cyber exercise (“KYHA”) brought together more than 120 central government employees to improve their technical skills and mutual cooperation against cyber attacks. Held at the IT Institute of the JAMK University of Applied Sciences in Jyväskylä on 12–16 May 2025, this cyber exercise, the second one this year, turned out to be a great success.

17.3.2025 | The impacts of both climate change and biodiversity loss can be seen in the daily lives of most Finns. This is the conclusion to be made from the answers to the 2025 Climate and Nature Barometers. In municipal policy green investments are identified as sources of vitality, but opinions diverge with respect to their environmental impacts. Climate solutions are considered to boost Finland’s competitiveness.

10.2.2025 | Municipalities and operators involved in Finland's critical infrastructure took part in the first national cyber exercise of the year at Jamk University of Applied Sciences between 3 and 7 February 2025. The exercise brought together cybersecurity, management and communications professionals especially from the north of Finland and Northern Ostrobothnia.

21.11.2024 | The Government proposes that on 22 November 2024 the President of the Republic approve the acts for establishing the Finnish Space Situational Awareness Centre.

10.10.2024 | The Government proposes funding for the establishment of the Finnish Space Situational Awareness Centre. Funding is proposed for the administrative branches of the Ministry of Transport and Communications, the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. The Ministry of Transport and Communications share of the funding amounts to EUR 411 000.  

7.10.2024 | A government-level cyber coordination group led by National Cyber Security Director Rauli Paananen has praised the cyber expertise of Finnish security authorities after taking part in the KYHA national cyber security exercise in September.

3.5.2024 | The Ministry of Transport and Communications requests comments on the draft memorandum concerning the national implementation of the EU Data Act. The deadline for submitting comments is 31 May 2024. The Ministry has also published a study, which was conducted by the Research Institute of the Finnish Economy, on the markets covered by the Data Act in Finland.

27.5.2024 | The Ministry of Transport and Communications requests comments on the draft government proposal for an act amending the Act on the Finnish Meteorological Institute and for an Act amending the Act on the Defence Forces. The amendments would enable the establishment of a space situational awareness centre in Finland. The deadline for submitting comments is 30 June 2024.

3.9.2024 | The 2025 budget proposal of Prime Minister Orpo's Government bolsters conditions for economic growth. Economic growth driven by the private sector will also serve to secure the financing base for central government finances. The fast-acting measures to curb indebtedness that were decided on due to the difficult situation in central government finances will move forward.

10.4.2024 | The Ministry of Transport and Communications has joined as a founding member to the Data Spaces Alliance Finland cooperation network. The Alliance brings together the leading Finnish data business organisations. The network is composed of 22 companies, public bodies and research institutes.

13.8.2020 | The Government has appointed Jussi Kaurola, 58, Doctor of Philosophy, as Director General of the Finnish Meteorological Institute. The appointment is for a fixed term from 1 September 2020 to 31 December 2023.

3.5.2023 | On 3 May 2023, a steering group appointed by the Ministry of Transport and Communications to examine the possible establishment of a Finnish space situational awareness centre issued a report recommending that the centre be established. It could be started by 2026.

12.6.2023 | On 12 June 2023, the Finnish Ministry of Transport and Communications published an operational gender equality and non-discrimination plan for 2023–2025. The aim of the plan is to promote equality and non-discrimination in the activities and decision-making of the administrative branch.

27.2.2023 | The majority of Finns consider that Finland can improve its competitiveness by investing in climate solutions and new kinds of competencies. Besides climate change, biodiversity loss has emerged as a serious environmental crisis, and the majority of the people are of the opinion that solutions to climate change and biodiversity loss should be sought as a whole.
