27.6.2025 | On 27 June 2025, the President of the Republic approved amendments to the Act on the Finnish Broadcasting Company Yle. The amendments will implement the legislative changes outlined by the parliamentary working group on Yle. They also incorporate the criteria and procedures for the appointment and dismissal of the management of public service media providers required by the European Media Freedom Act (EMFA). The legislative amendments will enter into force on 8 August 2025.

16.4.2025 | On 16 April 2025, the Government submitted a proposal to Parliament to amend the Act on the Finnish Broadcasting Company (Yle). The proposed amendments will implement the legislative changes outlined by the parliamentary working group on Yle. The proposal also incorporates the criteria and procedures for the appointment and dismissal of managers of public service media required by the European Media Freedom Act (EMFA).

The working group proposed cuts to YLE's funding and amendments to Act on the Finnish Broadcasting Company concerning transparency and security of supply.

15.9.2023 | On 12 September 2023, the state of Finland replied to the European Commission regarding the complaint against the Finnish Broadcasting Company, YLE, pursued by Sanoma Media Finland Ltd. Finland has requested a permission from the Commission to publish the reply. Due to EU legislation, correspondence with the Commission is, as a rule, confidential.

10.12.2020 | On 10 December 2020, the Government decided to continue the temporary exemption contained in the Government Decree on Television and Radio Operations that requires live television broadcasts to be subtitled only in connection with a retransmission. The period of exemption will continue until the end of 2021. The subtitling requirement for live broadcasts will become fully applicable on 1 January 2022.
