17.10.2025 | Minister of Transport and Communications Lulu Ranne has appointed Olli-Pekka Rantala, Director General of the Ministerial Governance Department, as Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transport and Communications for a fixed term starting on 1 November 2025.

24.11.2025 | The Assembly of the International Maritime Organization IMO will meet in London from 24 November to 3 December 2025. Finland is a candidate for re-election as a member of the IMO Council. The Assembly will vote on the members of the new Council on Friday 28 November 2025.

15.7.2024 | The Council of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) held its 132nd session in London from 8 to 12 July 2024. Finland participated in the session for the first time as a full member since its election to the IMO Council in December 2023.

30.12.2024 | On 30 December 2024, the President of the Republic of Finland ratified amendments to the Act on Environmental Protection in Maritime Transport and the related acts. The amendments implement the Government Programme, EU regulations and regulations of the International Maritime Organisation IMO. 

12.4.2023 | On 12 April 2023, the Ministry of Transport and Communications published a report on the opportunities provided by the introduction of the standard European track gauge in Finland and on the related impacts. Preliminary estimates show that the costs of the considered alternative implementations are significant in relation to the benefits.

3.4.2023 | Permanent Secretary Minna Kivimäki has been nominated a candidate for the post of Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). There are altogether seven candidates for the post.

2.8.2022 | In December 2021, the European Commission adopted a proposal for a new Regulation on Union guidelines for the development of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T). The proposal has been discussed in the working groups of the Council of the European Union and in the European Parliament.

19.4.2023 | Permanent Secretary Minna Kivimäki will visit London on 19–21 April 2023 to promote campaigns which seek a place for Finland at the heart of the International Maritime Organization, IMO. Ki-vimäki will meet key representatives of IMO Member States and maritime operators.

24.11.2022 | On 24 November 2022, the Government appointed Stefan Lee, Master of Science (Economics and Business Administration) as Deputy Cyber Security Director. Lee has also a master's degree in Advanced Studies on Mediation in Peace Processes. He was appointed for a fixed term from 8 December 2022 to 31 December 2024.

For the period required for filling the Director General's position, Miikka Rainiala, Director of Governance Steering Unit, has been appointed to serve in the post.
