The Ministry of Transport and Communications is requesting opinions on an assessment memorandum regarding regulatory and implementation options for a system to respond to location study requests. Opinions may be submitted until 24 January 2025.

The Ministry of Transport and Communications requests comments on the draft government proposal to amend the Private Roads Act. The proposed amendments respond to the needs identified by the authorities and courts applying the act, as well as to feedback from stakeholders. Comments may be submitted until 11 May 2026.

28.8.2023 | A COVID-19 legislation ex post evaluation, prepared jointly by the Ministry of Transport and Communications and the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom, has been released. The report examines the temporary legislation put in place in 2020–2021 in the administrative branch of the Ministry of Transport and Communications in consequence of COVID 19. 27.6.2025 | On 27 June 2025, the President of the Republic approved temporary amendments to the Act on Transport Services, which will enter into force on 1 July 2025. The purpose is to bring data on publicly supported passenger transport services in Northern Finland into one place.

21.11.2024 | At its meeting on 19 November 2024, the ministerial working group endorsed the submission of the updated roadmap under the EU Digital Decade 2030 programme to the European Commission. The ministerial working group also resolved to re-evaluate the transparency of critical infrastructure information and held discussions on legislation for the reform of regional state administration.

The security of communications networks is extensively regulated in the Act on Electronic Communications Services. Its provisions contain obligations to ensure that the security of communications networks is, above all, proactively safeguarded though retroactive measures may be used where necessary.

12.9.2024 | A parliamentary working group tasked with assessing the public service duties and funding of the Finnish Broadcasting Company (YLE) published its report on 12 September 2024. The working group proposed cuts to YLE's funding and amendments to Act on the Finnish Broadcasting Company concerning transparency and security of supply.

18.3.2024 | According to the Government Programme of Prime Minister Petteri Orpo, competition in passenger rail transport services will be increased by enabling municipalities, joint municipal authorities and regions to arrange outsourced services. The Ministry of Transport and Communications has launched a legislative project to make the necessary changes in legislation.

15.9.2023 | The process of updating the National Transport System Plan has started in accordance with the Government Programme. The Ministry of Transport and Communications has sent an assessment programme for the Plan for comments.

12.10.2023 | The Finnish Government has appointed a parliamentary working group to assess the Finnish Broadcasting Company’s (YLE) public service duties and funding. The parliamentary working group will submit its report by the end of Parliament’s spring session 2024.

16.7.2024 | The European Commission awarded EUR 39.11 million in funding under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) to 11 projects in Finland. Five central government projects received a total of EUR 20.16 million and six private sector projects a total of EUR 18.96 million in funding.

20.11.2023 | The World Radiocommunication Conference WRC-23 will start in Dubai on 20 November 2023. The conference decides on the future use of the radio spectrum. The goal is to increase the use of radio frequencies and enable new technologies and services. Finland participates in decision-making at the conference and is globally influencing future communication services to ensure competitiveness and international accessibility.

The impact of possible Russian counter-sanctions on different forms of transport has been evaluated as a part of normal official business at the Ministry of Transport and Communications as well. In this connection, the effects on air transport have also been evaluated, Minister of Transport and Local Government Paula Risikko says.
