23.6.2026 | The Ministry of Transport and Communications requests views on a draft government proposal to amend the Act on the Transport System and Highways, the Rail Transport Act and certain related acts. The aim is to improve the security and reliability of the transport network and to streamline the processes of planning and implementing the transport infrastructure. The deadline for submitting views is 23 August 2026.

In line with the Programme of Prime Minister Petteri Orpo's Government, Finland's Cyber Security Strategy has been revised to respond to the changed security environment. The strategy will make cyber security a more integral part of Finland's concept of comprehensive security.

In line with the Programme of Prime Minister Orpo's Government, Finland's Cyber Security Strategy has been revised to respond to the changed security environment. The objectives of the revised strategy extend to 2035. A strategy implementation plan has been drawn to describe the development measures to achieve the objectives. The plan was approved on 3 December 2024 by the steering group of the project developing an operating model for government security management.

On 27 June 2024, the Government appointed the Advisory Board for Network Security for a new term of office. The Advisory Board aims to assess and improve national security in communications networks. The Board’s term of office is from 1 July 2024 to 31 December 2027.

On 22 June 2022, the Government appointed the Advisory Board for Network Security for a new term of office. The role of the Advisory Board is to assess and develop the security of domestic communications networks and to support the authorities' decision-making processes. The Board was appointed for the period from 1 July 2022 to 30 June 2024.

11.3.2026 | Finland’s Ministry of Transport and Communications published a Joint Nordic Strategy for Transport System Preparedness on 11 March 2026. The strategy was handed over to the Nordic transport ministers in Rovaniemi where the ministers also issued a joint statement. As part of their meeting, the ministers will also visit the multinational Cold Response 26 military exercise in Lapland on 12 March 2026.

13.11.2025 | The Finnish Government submitted a communication to Parliament on 13 November 2025 regarding the European Commission’s proposal for a Regulation on the Connecting Europe Facility for the period 2028–2034. The Government welcomes the proposal and emphasises that funding should be more strongly directed towards strengthening defence and security, among other sectors. 

2.9.2025 | The Government of Prime Minister Petteri Orpo has reached a decision on its budget proposal for 2026. The Government’s decisions aim to support economic growth, which is picking up. Supporting economic growth and continuing responsible fiscal management is necessary to ensure the security of people in Finland and safeguard their access to important services going forward.

16.12.2025 | At the Energy Council meeting on 15 December 2025, Member States of the European Union adopted a partial general approach on the proposed regulation establishing Connecting Europe Facility for 2028–2034. Finland is in favour of the regulation’s emphasis on military mobility.

13.10.2025 | To support the preparation of the project "Security and new economic growth from information networks" (TUUTTI), the Ministry of Transport and Communications invited comments on the project's key needs and themes. The consultation was open from 19 June to 31 August 2025.  On 13 October 2025, the Ministry published a summary of the 33 comments received.

30.1.2025 | Communications networks are part of the infrastructure that is essential for the functioning of society. The security of communications networks is extensively regulated in the Act on Electronic Communications Services. Its provisions contain obligations to ensure that the security of communications networks is, above all, proactively safeguarded though retroactive measures may be used where necessary.

20.8.2025 | The Ministry of Transport and Communications proposes a permanent increase of EUR 4.7 million from 2026 onwards for measures set out in the Cyber Security Strategy. 21.11.2024 | The Government proposes that on 22 November 2024 the President of the Republic approve the acts for establishing the Finnish Space Situational Awareness Centre.

13.5.2025 | Transport ministers of Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden and Denmark will meet on 13–14 May 2025 in Helsinki. They will issue a joint statement on military mobility and security of supply.

10.10.2024 | The Government proposes funding for the establishment of the Finnish Space Situational Awareness Centre. Funding is proposed for the administrative branches of the Ministry of Transport and Communications, the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. The Ministry of Transport and Communications share of the funding amounts to EUR 411 000.  

24.4.2025 | The Government has proposed that EUR 20 million be allocated in the General Govern-ment Fiscal Plan for 2026–2029 for a planning project to extend the European track gauge from Sweden to Finland.

11.6.2025 | At the seminar held on 11 June 2025, the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency presented the main results of a study on extending the standard track gauge commonly used in Europe to northern Finland. According to the study, extending the narrower track gauge to Finland will primarily benefit military mobility.

12.2.2025 | Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transport and Communications Minna Kivimäki, together with the Ministry’s senior public officials, is visiting Brussels on 11–13 February 2025 to influence various EU processes.

27.5.2024 | The Ministry of Transport and Communications requests comments on the draft government proposal for an act amending the Act on the Finnish Meteorological Institute and for an Act amending the Act on the Defence Forces. The amendments would enable the establishment of a space situational awareness centre in Finland. The deadline for submitting comments is 30 June 2024.
