Press release

The Ministry of Transport and Communications has published a second generation intelligent strategy for transport. The strategy furthers the melding of intelligent transport as part of all other forms of transport and Finnish transport policy.

The objective is to develop a transport system in Finland that is one of the world's most progressive and efficient and is also known for its accountability. Finland published the world's first intelligent transport strategy in 2009.

The strategy facilitates an increase in transport information services, improves the productivity and efficiency of the transport system and promotes the birth of ICT innovations.

ICT is used to effectively influence mobility and transport options and supports development of the transport system. At the same time, it helps people to move around more easily, safely and economically, as well as in a more environmentally friendly manner.

The intelligent transport strategy will be implemented with key projects. The cost estimate for these projects running from 2013 to 2017 is 300 million euros. The public and private sectors will cooperate in carrying out key projects. The public sector will be the leader and facilitator of transport policy, while the private sector will implement and commercialise projects. Public administration funds allocated to the Ministry of Transport and Communications' agencies are included in the 2013-2017 decisions for spending limits.

The largest key projects include creating a snapshot of and control systems for the transport system, as well as building a unified public transportation system. Information services for transport, as well as ecological and intelligent mobility will also be improved.

Key projects will also include intelligent traffic monitoring, development of safety systems and ensuring interoperability of the logistic delivery chain. The key focus is to recognise good solutions quickly and ensure their impact with hands-on pilot programmes.

Intelligent transport is one of the fastest growing industries, which also offers attractive business opportunities for companies. The global intelligent transport market is worth tens of millions of euros.

Finland has excellent know-how in all areas of intelligent transport. Finnish companies now have a good opportunity to take a share of the intelligent transport market and give birth to new business operations, companies and jobs.
