7.10.2024 | Kansainvälisen merenkulkujärjestön (International Maritime Organization, IMO) meriympäristön suojelukomitea kokoontui Lontoossa 30.9.-4.10.2024. Komitean 82. istunnossa jatkettiin neuvotteluja maailmanlaajuisista keinoista vähentää meriliikenteen kasvihuonekaasupäästöjä. Liikenne- ja viestintäministeriön kansliapäällikkö Minna Kivimäki osallistui istuntoon 30.9.-2.10.2024.

10.7.2026 | The International Maritime Organization IMO convened at its 137th regular session in London on 6–10 July 2026. A particular focus was on the need to protect seafarers and the freedom of merchant shipping. The Council also decided on a number of questions related to the administration and strategic development of the IMO.

A total of approximately EUR 17.6 million in funding from the European Commission’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) is being sought for Finnish-led projects. In addition, approximately EUR 8.6 million in funding is being sought for Swedish-led projects that involve Finnish operators. The Ministerial Finance Committee decided in favour of the applications on 25 June 2026.

A Finnish-led project has applied for EUR 9.55 million in European Commission funding to reinforce subsea cable repair capacity. The project is coordinated by the Finnish National Emergency Supply Agency and involves partners from Finland, Sweden and Estonia. The Ministerial Finance Committee decided in favour of the proposal on 16 April 2026.

16.12.2022 | Kansainvälisen merenkulkujärjestö IMO:n meriympäristön suojelukomitean istunnossa Lontoossa 12.-16.12.2022 neuvoteltiin IMO:n alustavan kasvihuonekaasustrategian päivityksestä sekä lukuisista muista meriliikenteen ilmasto- ja ympäristöaiheista. Istunnon lopputulos jäi laihaksi kasvihuonekaasupäästöjen osalta. Valtiot kuitenkin saavuttivat sovun kahdesta meriliikenteen ympäristövaikutuksia Välimerellä vähentävästä toimesta.

11.5.2026 | The Ministry of Transport and Communications is inviting comments on the draft government proposal concerning the implementation of the Ship-Source Pollution Directive. The necessary amendments would be made to the Act on Environmental Protection in Maritime Transport. Comments may be submitted until 18 June 2026.

11.3.2026 | Finland’s Ministry of Transport and Communications published a Joint Nordic Strategy for Transport System Preparedness on 11 March 2026. The strategy was handed over to the Nordic transport ministers in Rovaniemi where the ministers also issued a joint statement. As part of their meeting, the ministers will also visit the multinational Cold Response 26 military exercise in Lapland on 12 March 2026.

17.12.2024 | Finland is actively involved in international efforts to keep shipping and the marine environment safe in the Baltic Sea.

7.10.2024 | The Marine Environment Protection Committee of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) met in London between 30 September and 4 October 2024. The 82nd session of the Committee continued negotiations on global measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from marine transport. Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transport and Communications Minna Kivimäki attended the session on 30 September–2 October 2024.

21.5.2025 | Cyprus and Finland are EU partners with strong maritime traditions and a shared interest in the advancement of European and global efforts to ensure that the future of maritime transport will be sustainable, safe, resilient and competitive.

12.2.2025 | Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transport and Communications Minna Kivimäki, together with the Ministry’s senior public officials, is visiting Brussels on 11–13 February 2025 to influence various EU processes.

3.7.2025 | The European Commission has awarded EUR 91.01 million under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) to nine projects in Finland. Of this, around EUR 59.60 million will go to government initiatives.

7.10.2024 | Internationella sjöfartsorganisationen (International Maritime Organization) IMO:s kommitté för skydd av den marina miljön sammanträdde i London 30.9–4.10.2024. Vid kommitténs 82:a session fortsatte förhandlingarna om globala metoder för att minska växthusgasutsläppen från sjötransporter. Kommunikationsministeriets kanslichef Minna Kivimäki deltog i sessionen 30.9–2.10.2024.

22.3.2024 | The International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Marine Environment Protection Committee convened in London on 18–22 March 2024. The committee’s 81st session discussed global action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from shipping.

19.12.2024 | Finland’s Central Government and other operators are applying for a total of approximately EUR 73.36 million in financial support for 11 transport projects from the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) for Transport. In addition, EU funding is being sought for the acquisition of a new icebreaker. The Ministerial Finance Committee decided in favour of the applications on 19 December 2024.

27.2.2024 | Secretary-General of International Maritime Organization Arsenio Antonio Domínguez Velasco will visit Finland from 27 February to 2 March 2024. Secretary-General Domínguez will meet Prime Minister Petteri Orpo, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transport and Communications Minna Kivimäki and Director General of the Transport and Communications Agency Traficom Jarkko Saarimäki.

13.3.2024 | Minister of Transport and Communications Lulu Ranne visited the Nordic Response 24 defence exercise in Lapland on 10–11 March 2024. Minister Ranne learnt about the activities of the Defence Forces, Nordic cooperation between the authorities and NATO-Nordic defence cooperation from the infrastructure perspective.

8.3.2024 | Minister of Transport and Communications Lulu Ranne will visit the Nordic Response 24 defence exercise in Lapland on 10–11 March 2024. This is the first time that Finland’s Minister of Transport and Communications will be present in an international military exercise. During her visit, Minister Ranne will learn about the activities of the Defence Forces and the Air Force, Nordic cooperation between the authorities and NATO-Nordic defence cooperation from the infrastructure perspective.

16.12.2022 | A session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) held in London on 12-16 December 2022 discussed an update to the preliminary greenhouse gas strategy of the IMO, together with several other maritime climate and environmental issues.
