Finland has joined the Global Coalition on Telecommunications (GCOT) in connection with the Barcelona Mobile World Congress. The congress also saw the release of the GCOT’s principles for security and resilience in 6G, which Finland supports.

“In Finland, cutting-edge technology and security go hand in hand. It is also fair to say that Finland is the birthplace of 6G, and that we are a leader in secure and reliable communications network technologies. We should deepen our cooperation with trusted partners and like-minded countries so that we can create better conditions for secure societies and growth together,” said Minister of Transport and Communications Lulu Ranne.

In line with the GCOT’s principles for security and resilience in 6G, 6G networks must be protected against cyberattacks and physical threats. Communications network supply chains must be able to withstand various kinds of disruptions, and the networks must be able to provide continuous, reliable service.

GCOT is a multilateral alliance that aims to develop cooperation between its partner countries’ administrations with a view to coordinating national telecommunications policies and fostering dialogue with industry and academia. The coalition was established in 2023 by Australia, Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States. Finland and Sweden joined the coalition in connection with the Mobile World Congress in March 2026.

Finland aims to remain at the forefront of mobile communications networks and network technologies

The Ministry of Transport and Communications published Finland’s 6G roadmap on 17 June 2025. The roadmap sets out guidelines on developing and deploying next-generation mobile communications technologies for the 2030s Finland’s goal is to remain at the forefront of mobile communications networks and network technologies in the 2030s.

The implementation of the roadmap will be monitored as part of the project on security and new economic growth from communication networks, known as the TUUTTI project, and by the Advisory Board for Network Security. The TUUTTI project will shape Finland’s communication network policies until 2037 while taking into account technological advances and changes in the global operating environment.
