On 3 November 2003, the International RSA Information Security Conference held in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, awarded in the European policy series the National Information Security Strategy devised at the Finnish Ministry of Transport and Communications. According to the independent judging panel of private sector and EU information security experts the awarded projects represented the absolute elite of the field.

- We are, of course, pleased to receive such recognition. However, we have to remember that the strategy is not about winning awards but building trust and confidence in the information society, says Mr Harri Pursiainen, Director-General of the Ministry's Communications Department.

The National Information Security Strategy aims to provide protective measures against threats to information security in both normal and exceptional circumstances. It formulates the efforts of the Government, trade, industry, organisations and private citizens into common information security objectives. Government resolution on the National Information Security Strategy was submitted on 4 September.

On international scale, the Strategy is one of the first programmes that concern information security in the whole society. A national Information Security Advisory Board appointed by the Ministry monitors the implementation of the strategy aswell as the coordination of the related measures.

The strategy is based on a proposal by the Advisory Board that served from autumn 2001 through spring 2003.

The RSA Conference, which is now taking place for the fourth time, is the most significant e-security event of the year. It convenes in Amsterdam until 5 November.
