16.2.2023 | On 16 February 2023, the President of the Republic approved amendments to the Postal Act. At the same time, provisions on government grants for newspaper delivery included in the Postal Act were confirmed. The support will be regulated in more detail in a government decree. The aim is to ensure equal access to postal services as well as to secure the conditions for the five-day delivery of newspapers across Finland.

3.9.2024 | The 2025 budget proposal of Prime Minister Orpo's Government bolsters conditions for economic growth. Economic growth driven by the private sector will also serve to secure the financing base for central government finances. The fast-acting measures to curb indebtedness that were decided on due to the difficult situation in central government finances will move forward.

26.6.2020 | The Ministry of Transport and Communications has appointed a working group to assist in further preparation of the temporary government grant intended to support journalism. The members of the working group will represent the media sector and experts in the field. The term of the group will be from 1 July 2020 to 31 December 2020.

15.6.2020 | Comments are invited on the government proposal on media support board and government decree regarding government aid for promoting journalistic contents. The deadline for comments is 27 July 2020.

28.4.2020 | A report on the support for journalism commissioned by the Ministry of Transport and Communications has been completed. The report proposes a support model consisting of both swift forms of support and a more permanent support system for journalism.

8.4.2021 | A working group appointed by the Ministry of Transport and Communications to study forms of media support is proposing permanent forms of assistance for media operations that provide news and current affairs content. These forms would be editorial production assistance and development assistance. The assistance will seek to promote communications that are reliable, diverse, wide-ranging and socially meaningful.

7.9.2017 | The Postal Act will be reformed so that the delivery and collection obligations for universal service products and the requirements for the speed of delivery of letters will be made more flexible. The aim of the amendments is to respond to the changes in the operating environment. The reform will apply to universal service products, i.e. letters or parcels below 2 kg in weight carrying a postage stamp.

5.3.2014 | In his report, administrator, Licentiate of Laws Tuomas Harpf suggests that Finland adopt a similar model to the media support system that is in use in Denmark in order to support production and innovation. However, this support should be granted on a fixed-term basis and it should be as neutral as possible in terms of competition. The total amount of support given would be 30 million euros.
