Finland agrees on principles guiding 6G development with partner countries

Finland has joined the multilateral Joint Statement Endorsing Principles for 6G led by the United States. The joint statement was published at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on 27 February 2024.

The joint statement contains an agreement on common principles that will guide the development of 6G nationally and internationally. By joining the joint statement, Finland will strengthen cooperation with its key strategic partners in future wireless communications networks.

In addition to Finland, the joint statement was signed by Australia, the United Kingdom, Japan, Canada, the Republic of Korea, France, Sweden, the Czech Republic and the United States.

“Finland is one of the leading countries in the development and rapid deployment of mobile network technology. I am pleased that we are strengthening our international partnerships with like-minded countries. This is a good follow-up to the joint statement Finland and the United States signed last summer on 6G cooperation," says Minister of Transport and Communications Lulu Ranne.

Working in collaboration to influence international 6G policy is important to ensure that future mobile networks are consistent with the democratic value base. Per the joint statement, in its international influence Finland emphasises that 6G technology must be safe, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals, and available to an increasing amount of the public.

"It is important to continue the development of 6G in cooperation so that future mobile networks are safe and reliable. Finland can also lead the way in this due to our worldclass 6G expertise,” says Minister Ranne.

For decades, Finland has been one of the world's key experts in mobile technology. Today, Finland is one of the five leading countries in the development of 6G.
