25.6.2026 | A total of approximately EUR 17.6 million in funding from the European Commission’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) is being sought for Finnish-led projects. In addition, approximately EUR 8.6 million in funding is being sought for Swedish-led projects that involve Finnish operators. The Ministerial Finance Committee decided in favour of the applications on 25 June 2026.

The Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) met in London from 18 to 27 June 2025 for their 110th session.

16.4.2026 | A Finnish-led project has applied for EUR 9.55 million in European Commission funding to reinforce subsea cable repair capacity. The project is coordinated by the Finnish National Emergency Supply Agency and involves partners from Finland, Sweden and Estonia. The Ministerial Finance Committee decided in favour of the proposal on 16 April 2026.

28.4.2025 | On 21 February 2025, the European Commission and the EU High Representative issued a Joint Communication on an EU Action Plan on Cable Security concerning submarine cables. The Ministry of Transport and Communications will inform Parliament of the action plan on 25 april 2025.

21.11.2025 | The European Commission has selected communications projects to receive funding from the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF). In the fourth round of calls for proposals under the CEF Digital programme, five projects coordinated by Finnish operators received a total of around EUR 4.67 million in funding. In addition, funding was awarded to a Swedish submarine cable project that is partly placed in Finland.

30.1.2025 | Finnish operators apply for a total of EUR 13.76 million in funding from the European Commission’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) for seven communications projects. In addition, four Swedish projects are partly placed in Finland. The Ministerial Finance Committee decided in favour of the applications on 30 January 2025.

6.12.2023 | The telecommunications ministers of Finland, Estonia and Sweden stress that the resilience of critical underwater infrastructure is now more important than ever. The ministers underlined the importance of resilient infrastructure at the Telecommunications Council in Brussels 5 December 2023.

4.12.2023 | The European Commission provided funding from the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF). Finnish companies applied for funding for six projects that were included in the second CEF Digital round of applications. Four of them received a total of EUR 22.4 million in funding.

23.10.2023 | The Spanish Presidency of the Council of the EU will hold an informal meeting of telecommunications ministers in León on 23–24 October 2023. Minister of Transport and Communications Lulu Ranne will represent Finland at the meeting. It will be an informal meeting where no decisions are taken.

25.11.2016 | Constructing a telecommunications cable between Europe and Asia via the North-East Passage would be politically and technologically feasible, says a report presented to Finland's Minister of Transport and Communications Anne Berner by Paavo Lipponen and Reijo Svento. If the project was carried out, the cable would significantly speed up telecommunications between Europe and Asia and respond to the increasing capacity needs. It would also benefit the national economies in Europe, Russia and Asia.

27.4.2016 | Minister of Transport and Communications Anne Berner has appointed former Prime Minister Paavo Lipponen and former Managing Director of FiCom Reijo Svento to explore the prerequisites for international cooperation in launching the cable-laying project in the North-East Passage.

Minister Krista Kiuru is pleased at the implementation of the cable project started by the Ministry of Transport and Communications. 28.5.2020 | The Government and the Ministry of Transport and Communications have adopted two decrees that specify the new Water Traffic Act. The decrees deal with road ferries, the manning of ships and certification of seafarers, and they will enter into force simultaneously with the Water Traffic Act, on 1 June 2020.

18.3.2020 | On 17March 2020, the Ministry of Transport and Communications sent draft decrees on road ferries, and on the manning of ships and certification of seafarers out for comments. Both amendments are based on the new Water Traffic Act, which will enter into force at the beginning of June. The aim is also to improve the overall safety of water transport.
