  1. 26.11.2025 | In 2024, the European Union adopted a directive amending the Directive on ship-source pollution. On 25 November 2025, the Ministry of Transport and Communications the Ministry of Transport and Communications decided to launch a project to start preparing the necessary legislative amendments.

  3. The Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) met in London on 7–11 April 2025. After challenging negotiations, the Committee’s 83rd session reached a provisional agreement on measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from ships. The final decisions are to be made in October 2025.

  4. 29.2.2024 | On 15 February 2024, the Member States, Parliament and Commission of the European Union reached a preliminary agreement on amendments to the Directive on Ship-Source Pollution and on the Introduction of Penalties for Infringements. The aim of the amendments is to improve the protection of the marine environment. On 28 February, the provisional agreement was discussed in the Permanent Representatives Committee of the Member States (Coreper).

  5. 20.10.2023 | On 19 and 20 October 2023, the Government and the President of the Republic discussed the national approval of amendments made to conventions adopted by the Marine Environment Protection Committee of the International Maritime Organization, IMO. The amendments concern the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) and the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships' Ballast Water and Sediments.

  6. 18.9.2023 | The Ministry of Transport and Communications requests comments on the national adoption of convention amendments adopted by the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The amendments have been made to the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) and the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships' Ballast Water and Sediments. The deadline for submitting comments is 3 October 2023.

  7. 30.12.2024 | On 30 December 2024, the President of the Republic of Finland ratified amendments to the Act on Environmental Protection in Maritime Transport and the related acts. The amendments implement the Government Programme, EU regulations and regulations of the International Maritime Organisation IMO.

  11. 29.4.2021 | The Government proposes amendments to the Act on Environmental Protection in Maritime Transport. The aim is to improve the reception of waste in ports. In a key amendment, the obligation to receive waste from vessels would be expanded to coastal and inland marinas with 25-49 berths.   18. 14.5.2019 | The Ministry of Transport and Communications has circulated for public commenting proposals for acts under which Finland would adopt the Convention on Liability and Compensation for Damage in Connection with the Carriage of Hazardous and Noxious Substances by Sea (HNS Convention). The adoption of the Convention would increase shipowners' liability for the carriage of hazardous and noxious substances by sea and ensure that persons suffering damages are compensated more promptly and effectively.

  19. 11.7.2011 | International Maritime Organization IMO's Marine Environment Protection Committee will meet in London between the 11th and 15th of July. The meeting agenda will include, among other things, marine energy efficiency, greenhouse gas emissions by maritime transport and emissions from cruise ships in the Baltic Sea. The meeting delegation includes representatives of the authorities and the business sector.
