The Ministry of Transport and Communications published the final report of the Digital Panel on 15 June 2026. The report presents recommendations for measures to strengthen Finland’s economic growth, competitiveness and capacity for renewal through digitalisation, emerging technologies and the data economy.

2.7.2024 | The European Commission has published its annual State of the Digital Decade report, in which it assesses the progress of Member States in applying digitalisation and issues recommendations for further action. The particular strengths of Finland specified in the report are comprehensive basic digital skills and digitalisation in small and medium-sized businesses.

10.4.2024 | The Ministry of Transport and Communications has joined as a founding member to the Data Spaces Alliance Finland cooperation network. The Alliance brings together the leading Finnish data business organisations. The network is composed of 22 companies, public bodies and research institutes.

14.11.2022 | The Technology Advisory Board, the Parliamentary Working Group on Research, Development and Innovation, the Working Group on Sustainable Growth, and the Artificial Intelligence 4.0 programme have published a joint call to the current Government and future governments. The chairpersons of the working groups are very concerned about Finland’s future.

28.7.2022 | Finland ranked first in the European Union’s digital performance comparison. The European Commission’s annual Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI) monitors the digital performance of EU Member States and tracks their progress in digitalisation. Finland has been at the top of the list for several years, ranking number two in 2021 and number one in 2019 and 2020.

28.9.2021 | On 21 May 2021, central government and municipal negotiators reached an agreement on establishing a project company for planning the Itärata eastern rail link. The company would be tasked with planning and financing the Lentorata–Porvoo–Kouvola railway line project until the line is ready for construction. The Ministerial Committee on Economic Policy discussed the establishment of the project company from the state’s point of view on 28 September 2021.

22.9.2020 | The Ministry of Transport and Communications invites comments on a draft bill amending the Maritime Act. According to the amendment, parallel ownership registration of a vessel would, in some cases, be allowed in Finland at the same time as the vessel is registered in another state.

The Government proposes additional funding of EUR 23.2 million to the administrative branch of the Ministry of Transport and Communications to support the operation of cargo and passenger shipping companies.

5.10.2020 | According to a new Logistics Digitalisation Strategy, use of real-time, digital data as well as common rules on how to utilise the data are needed in order to digitalise the logistics sector.The vision of the Strategy is that Finland will move towards efficient and sustainable logistics by means of digitalisation.
