A working group appointed by the Ministry of Transport and Communications has started its work to promote 6G communications technologies. The aim is to prepare a national 6G roadmap and to encourage cooperation and exchange of information in the field of future-generation wireless network technologies. Members of the working group represent key central government bodies as well as stakeholders in the research and business sector.

17.12.2024 | At its meeting on 17 December 2024, the ministerial working group on reforming society decided on updating the Digital Compass implementation plan and on circulating for comments the government proposal concerning legislation supplementing the European Data Act. The ministers also discussed the progress of the implementation of the cyber security strategy.

21.11.2024 | At its meeting on 19 November 2024, the ministerial working group endorsed the submission of the updated roadmap under the EU Digital Decade 2030 programme to the European Commission. The ministerial working group also resolved to re-evaluate the transparency of critical infrastructure information and held discussions on legislation for the reform of regional state administration.

22.4.2026 | The Legal Committee of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) met in London on 13–17 April 2026. The meeting discussed the prevention of increased fraudulent registrations and measures to combat unlawful operations of ships.

26.9.2025 | The Finnish Minister of Transport and Communications Lulu Ranne will attend the G20 Digital Economy Ministerial Meeting in Cape Town, South Africa, from 29 September to 1 October 2025. In 2025, the G20 Presidency is assumed by South Africa. 

4.10.2023 | Digital transactions increase public services that are independent of time and place, and boost the efficiency and sustainability of administration. The ministerial working group on reforming society has determined the principles for promoting official digital transactions over the present government term.

28.1.2025 | The working group that examined impact assessment capability in the administrative branch of the Ministry of Transport and Communications and its development has completed its work. The working group defined a target state of impact assessment capability and priorities for the development and created a framework for the evaluation and development of impact assessment capability.

15.9.2023 | The ministerial working group on reforming society held its first meeting on 14 September 2023. This working group will seek to reform public administration and digitalisation, thereby strengthening Finland as a whole.

11.12.2023 | At its meeting of 8 December 2023, the ministerial working group on social transformation adopted the roadmap for Finland's Digital Compass. The roadmap specifies the measures for achieving the objectives set out for the Digital Compass.

20.5.2025 | The Ministerial Committee on Economic Policy decided on 20 May 2025 to fully finance flight connections between six regional airports and Helsinki up to 27 February 2028. Air connections to the city of Savonlinna, however, will be funded out of government funds up to 50 per cent only. The decision is based on the spring 2026 government discussion on spending limits.

11.2.2026 | VR-Group Plc and Suomen Ostoliikennekalusto Oy announced today that they have signed an asset purchase agreement concerning the rolling stock used in passenger rail services funded by the government. The rolling stock will be transferred to Suomen Ostoliikennekalusto's ownership from the beginning of March.

25.11.2022 | The coordination of emergency preparedness related to critical information and communications technology infrastructure will be assigned to the National Cyber Security Director. The Ministerial working group on developing the digital transformation, the data economy and public administration endorsed the matter on 25 November.

24.1.2023 | The development of premises used by central government authorities is being continued. The aim is to increase the security and reliability of properties used by authorities.

5.10.2022 | The central government will implement an extensive energy saving programme in its premises with the aim to help Finland overcome the current challenging energy situation. The Ministerial working group on developing the digital transformation, the data economy and public administration discussed the matter on 5 October. Minister of Local Government Sirpa Paatero fully took over as chair of the ministerial working group for the remainder of the government term.

27.10.2025 | Tero Jokilehto, Senior Ministerial Adviser at the Finnish Ministry of Transport and Communications, has been elected chair of the Inland Surface Transport Group for the next three years. The Inland Surface Transport Group is a sub-group of the Transport Group, which is one of the planning groups under NATO’s Resilience Committee. 

14.2.2022 | Finland is preparing a national digital compass during spring 2022. In its meeting on 14 February 2022, the Ministerial Working Group on Developing the Digital Transformation, the Data Economy and Public Administration approved Finland’s digital vision for 2030 and set targets for the national digital compass as a basis for further work.

26.1.2022 | The Ministerial Working Group on Developing the Digital Transformation, the Data Economy and Public Administration decided to circulate for comments a resolution on technology policy. The goal of the Government resolution is that in 2030 Finland will be the most successful and best known country for generating wellbeing from the development and utilisation of technology.

10.3.2022 | The Ministerial working group on developing the digital transformation, the data economy and public administration will take responsibility for cybersecurity and the preparedness of public administration. The Government altered the tasks of the ministerial working group on 10 March.

18.3.2022 | The Government has begun preparations for developing cybersecurity and the preparedness of public administration. The goal is to form a situation picture and assess the necessary development measures in the circumstances caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
