Press release from the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment and the Ministry of Transport and Communications.

On 30 June 2021, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment and the Ministry of Transport and Communications published the Sustainable Growth Programme for the Transport Sector and its accompanying handbook.

The Sustainable Growth Programme for the Transport Sector 2021-2023 is an update of the National Growth Programme for the Transport Sector. The recently published sustainable growth programme promotes business-driven innovation, internationalisation, and growth based on sustainable solutions in the transport sector. Representatives from various ministries, cities, agencies, research institutes, and businesses have participated in the steering group preparing the programme.

The aim of the programme is to promote investment and international growth in the sector through ecologically, economically, and socially sustainable solutions. Each of the programme's measure aims to promote the development of skills and solutions in businesses to solve the challenges posed by climate change, biodiversity losses, and urbanisation in Finland and the international markets. The Sustainable Growth Programme for the Transport Sector encourages closer cooperation between private and public sector actors. The aim of the programme is to create international business ecosystems and 10,000 new jobs in the Finnish transport sector by 2025.

The handbook included in the growth programme is a joint expression of the industry's will to actively and responsibly develop the sector and systematically transition into an export-driven growth industry. The handbook clarifies the roles of public and private sector actors on the transport market. It describes ways of promoting the attractiveness and sustainable growth of the industry, as well as best practices to achieve a common goal.

What next?

A steering group has been set up to monitor the implementation of the Sustainable Growth Programme in the Transport Sector, with representatives from central government, local governments, businesses, and the research sector. The steering group will monitor the progress of the measures described in the programme and decide on any new complementary measures.
