6.6.2025 | Finland welcomes the EU international digital strategy, which was published as a joint communication of the European Commission and the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy on 5 June 2025. 

5.3.2024 | The Finnish Ministry of Transport and Communications has outlined its priorities for influencing the five-year programme of the next European Commission. They are based on the Finnish Government’s common priorities, outlined in the Europe communication E 58/2023, and elaborate the common priorities on matters pertaining to the branch of government of the Ministry of Transport and Communications.

12.9.2022 | The prolonged COVID-19 pandemic, Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine and accelerating climate change have led to a situation in Finland and globally where the future seems rather uncertain. In the midst of uncertainty, decision-making is difficult. Finland will hold parliamentary elections in spring 2023, and the new Government Programme will outline policies for the next few years.

12.9.2018 | The European Commission proposes that the practice of daylight saving time be ended from the beginning of 2019. According to the proposal, the bi-annual clock changes would be abandoned throughout Europe.

15.11.2018 | The Ministry of Transport and Communications is joining the international MyData Global association as a founding member.

27.6.2018 | The Commission published the first and second mobility package targeting road traffic in 2017. They contained legislative initiatives on access to the road transport market, social issues, transport pricing and the monitoring and reporting of CO2 emissions from heavy goods vehicles.

26.9.2018 | A survey on ending the seasonal time changes will be available on Otakantaa.fi site from 26 September to 12 October 2018.  It will provide an opportunity to express views on what should be Finland's permanent standard time in future: summer-time, winter-time or some other time zone.

15.2.2017 | The total overhaul of the Road Traffic Act (Tieliikennelaki 267/1981) has transitioned to the statement phase. The regulations concerning action and behaviour in road transport have been compiled in the legal draft. With this renewal, the regulatory framework would be streamlined to replace the ambiguities and shortcomings of the old legislation as well as prepare road transport for rapid technical advancement and automation.

23.11.2017 | On 23 November 2017, the Finnish Government submitted to Parliament its proposal on a new Road Traffic Act. The purpose of the new act is to improve the smooth running and safety of transport and create preconditions for the digitalisation and safe automation of traffic while making progress with deregulation.

1.9.2015 | Minister of Transport and Communications Anne Berner is heading the Government's key project where legal provisions will be improved. The goal of this deregulation project is to facilitate enterprise operation and citizens' everyday life by regulating less and renewing necessary regulations. This project is used to support Finland's growth, strengthen competitiveness and promote digitalisation.

22.10.2015 | Common maximum weight regulations have been proposed for goods transport between Finland and Russia. In addition, new regulations are proposed for taxi transport between Finland and Russia, and for the driving licenses used by Russians in Finland.

17.9.2015 | A legislative reform is to be submitted to parliament, which would allow the use of e.g. kickboards with electric engines and Segway type devices in road traffic. According to the legislation currently in place, the aforementioned vehicles can only be used in closed areas and indoors.

The ministries and branches of administration have been working actively to promote the aim of dropping unnecessary regulation and streamlining legislation.
