18.12.2025 | The Government adopted the National Transport System Plan for 2026–2037 and submitted it in the form of a report to Parliament on 18 December 2025.

Finland’s Ministry of Transport and Communications published a Joint Nordic Strategy for Transport System Preparedness on 11 March 2026. The strategy was handed over to the Nordic transport ministers in Rovaniemi where the ministers also issued a joint statement. As part of their meeting, the ministers will also visit the multinational Cold Response 26 military exercise in Lapland on 12 March 2026.

19.11.2025 | Minister of Transport and Communications Lulu Ranne participated in the Summit on European Digital Sovereignty in Berlin on 18 November 2025. Finland also signed the Declaration for European Digital Sovereignty initiated by Austria and published in connection with the summit.

10.10.2025 | Finland and the United States have signed a memorandum of understanding on icebreaker cooperation. Finnish President Alexander Stubb and US President Donald Trump signed the memorandum of understanding at their meeting in Washington on 9 October. Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo also attended the meeting. This memorandum of understanding lays the foundation for commercial agreements between the United States Coast Guard and Finnish companies.

16.9.2022 | On 16 September 2022, the European Commission published a proposal for a Media Freedom Act (MFA). The aim of the Act is to harmonise the legal framework of EU Member States in the media sector to enhance the functioning of the internal market and to promote media freedom.

4.6.2025 | The EU Transport and Telecommunications Council will convene in Luxembourg from 5 to 6 June 2025. Minister of Transport and Communications Lulu Ranne will represent Finland at the meeting.

12.9.2022 | The prolonged COVID-19 pandemic, Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine and accelerating climate change have led to a situation in Finland and globally where the future seems rather uncertain. In the midst of uncertainty, decision-making is difficult. Finland will hold parliamentary elections in spring 2023, and the new Government Programme will outline policies for the next few years.

27.3.2024 | The Council of the European Union adopted the European Media Freedom Act (EMFA) on 26 March 2024. The EMFA will change the way media is regulated.

22.8.2024 | The responsibility for the ownership steering of Arctia Ltd will be transferred from the Ownership Steering Department of the Prime Minister’s Office to the Ministry of Transport and Communications. On 22 August 2024, the Government issued a decree amending the Decree on the Ministry of Transport and Communications and a decree amending the Decree on the Prime Minister's Office.

22.12.2022 | The Finnish majority state-owned company Cinia is part of an international consortium engaged in planning an Arctic submarine cable that would connect the telecommunication networks of Europe, North America and the Far East. Together with its international partners, Cinia has established a development company to promote this Far North Fiber project that would be the first cable system to pass through the Arctic region, which connects several continents.

16.10.2023 | The EU ministers responsible for the environment and climate change issues will meet in Luxembourg on 16 October to discuss the EU’s objectives for the negotiations at the UN Climate Change Conference to be held in Dubai. The conclusions to be adopted by the Environment Council will constitute the EU’s objective for the Climate Change Conference. Finland’s representative at the Environment Council will be Minister of Climate and the Environment Kai Mykkänen.

2.6.2023 | Finland’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Pekka Haavisto and United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken signed a Joint Statement on Cooperation in Advanced Wireless Communications between Finland and the United States in Helsinki on 2 June. In the Joint Statement, Finland and the United States confirm their common ambition to cooperate in key areas of 6G research and development and to increase interaction between Finnish and US actors.

3.11.2016 | Prime Minister Juha Sipilä will take part in the annual forum of the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region which will be held in Stockholm on 8 November 2016. In conjunction with the forum, Prime Minister Sipilä will hold bilateral discussions with the Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven.
