17.6.2026 | Secure and reliable communications networks are the foundation of functionality of society, security of supply, investments and growth of the data economy. The efficiency of communications networks affects people’s daily lives, the operating environment of businesses and the ability of authorities to carry out their duties also during disruptions.

A working group appointed by the Ministry of Transport and Communications has started its work to promote 6G communications technologies. The aim is to prepare a national 6G roadmap and to encourage cooperation and exchange of information in the field of future-generation wireless network technologies. Members of the working group represent key central government bodies as well as stakeholders in the research and business sector.

Finland has joined the multilateral Joint Statement Endorsing Principles for 6G led by the United States. The joint statement was published at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on 27 February 2024.

The Ministry of Transport and Communications has launched the TUUTTI project for security and growth through communications networks. This project will formulate national policies for developing a secure communications network infrastructure fostering sustainable growth and competitiveness through digitalisation until 2037.

On 28 January 2026, the Ministry of Transport and Communications published an interim review of the project on security and new economic growth from communication networks, known as the TUUTTI project. The review outlines the project’s progress and presents the key findings to date.

11.12.2025 | A round table discussion on port safety and security took place on 11 December 2025 at the invitation of Minister of Transport and Communications Lulu Ranne and Minister of the Interior Mari Rantanen. The meeting focussed on the security situation in Finnish ports and how they might be impacted by changes taking place in the operating environment.

5.5.2025 | Minister for Foreign Affairs Elina Valtonen, Minister of Transport and Communications Lulu Ranne and Director General of the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom Jarkko Saarimäki will meet Secretary-General of International Telecommunications Union Doreen Bogdan-Martin in Helsinki on 6 May 2025.

30.1.2025 | Communications networks are part of the infrastructure that is essential for the functioning of society. The security of communications networks is extensively regulated in the Act on Electronic Communications Services. Its provisions contain obligations to ensure that the security of communications networks is, above all, proactively safeguarded though retroactive measures may be used where necessary.

19.5.2025 | A national cyber exercise (“KYHA”) brought together more than 120 central government employees to improve their technical skills and mutual cooperation against cyber attacks. Held at the IT Institute of the JAMK University of Applied Sciences in Jyväskylä on 12–16 May 2025, this cyber exercise, the second one this year, turned out to be a great success.

17.10.2024 | On 17 October 2024, the Government submitted a legislative proposal to Parliament on amending the Act on Environmental Protection in Maritime Transport and the related acts. The proposed amendments would implement the Government Programme, EU regulation and regulation of the International Maritime Organization IMO.

8.5.2024 | On 8 May 2024, the Government submitted a Union communication to Parliament, proposing that Finland have observer status in the European Digital Infrastructure Consortium for the Alliance for Language Technologies (ALT-EDIC).

25.4.2024 | The Ministry of Transport and Communications invites comments on the draft proposal on amendments to the Act on Environmental Protection in Maritime Transport and certain related acts. The deadline for submitting comments is 20 June 2024.

26.1.2022 | The Ministerial Working Group on Developing the Digital Transformation, the Data Economy and Public Administration decided to circulate for comments a resolution on technology policy. The goal of the Government resolution is that in 2030 Finland will be the most successful and best known country for generating wellbeing from the development and utilisation of technology.

14.6.2022 | The Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) met on 6-10 June 2022. At the remote meeting, guidelines were adopted to specify the short-term emissions reduction measure negotiated already in June 2021. The measure aims at improving the energy efficiency of existing ships and at limiting their carbon intensity.
