20.5.2025 | The Ministerial Committee on Economic Policy decided on 20 May 2025 to fully finance flight connections between six regional airports and Helsinki up to 27 February 2028. The Ministry of Transport and Communications and the Ministry of Finance have completed a joint outlook review of the current state of transport taxation and financing, and options for reform. The review report is the first part of the Government’s comprehensive reform of transport taxation and financing set out in the Programme of Prime Minister Petteri Orpo’s Government.

Following complex negotiations and a rare vote, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) decided to postpone the final adoption of the long-discussed regulation package on maritime transport emissions by at least one year. The decision means that the proposed regulation will not come into force as originally scheduled in March 2027.

9.8.2017 | The Government has decided to open passenger rail transport to competition. In the 2020s, VR will no longer have exclusive right to the provision of rail transport services in the Finnish rail network and other operators can enter the passenger rail transport market as well. The reform will be carried out in an orderly manner, divided into stages and follow the principles of good human resources policy.

28.9.2021 | On 21 May 2021, central government and municipal negotiators reached an agreement on establishing a project company for planning the Itärata eastern rail link. The company would be tasked with planning and financing the Lentorata–Porvoo–Kouvola railway line project until the line is ready for construction. The Ministerial Committee on Economic Policy discussed the establishment of the project company from the state’s point of view on 28 September 2021.
