15.2.2017 | The total overhaul of the Road Traffic Act (Tieliikennelaki 267/1981) has transitioned to the statement phase. The regulations concerning action and behaviour in road transport have been compiled in the legal draft. With this renewal, the regulatory framework would be streamlined to replace the ambiguities and shortcomings of the old legislation as well as prepare road transport for rapid technical advancement and automation.

17.9.2015 | A legislative reform is to be submitted to parliament, which would allow the use of e.g. kickboards with electric engines and Segway type devices in road traffic. According to the legislation currently in place, the aforementioned vehicles can only be used in closed areas and indoors.

24.1.2024 | Finland has successfully applied for EU funding from the European Commission, which awarded EUR 39.45 million from the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) to seven military mobility projects in Finland. As the sum applied for was EUR 43.16 million, this call for proposals was a great success for Finland.

22.8.2022 | The Ministry of Transport and Communications has appointed a monitoring group for the Transport Safety Strategy. It is tasked with monitoring the Strategy's implementation and effects. The term of the group is from 1 September 2022 to 31 December 2026.

1.7.2020 | What are the characteristics of a good path for walking or cycling? How to motivate more and more people to use sustainable transportation for short distances to work, school or shops? How to improve the preconditions for increasing walking and cycling across Finland? The Ministry of Transport and Communications will establish a National stakeholder forum for walking and cycling for the present government term. The first forum will be held on 7 September 2020. 

7.2.2020 | Recipients of funding from the investment programme for walking and cycling have been selected. The Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom allocated 3.5 million euros in grants to a total of 12 projects. The selected projects aim to make walking and cycling a more convenient and attractive option as well as improve safety.

23.3.2018 | The Government adopted a resolution on promoting walking and cycling on Thursday, 22 March. In support of the resolution, the Ministry of Transport and Communications has published a more detailed programme on promoting walking and cycling. It is the first government resolution on promoting walking and cycling to which several public operators and organisations have committed.

8.10.2018 | The message in a new Special Report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is clear: The climate is warming at an alarming rate. Swift and radical changes are needed in order to ensure that temperatures do not rise more than 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels. The same also applies to transport. One fifth of Finland's greenhouse gases come from transport and the majority of these from road traffic.

17.4.2020 | The Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom granted mobility management subsidies for 35 projects in different parts of Finland with an aim to support sustainable mobility and influence people's choice of modes of travel.

20.4.2011 | The Finnish Ministry of Transport and Communications has prepared a national strategy for walking and cycling. The strategy, set to run until 2020, seeks to ensure that walking and cycling will gain their own positions in the transport system recognised in policy alongside other modes of transport.

13.12.2013 | The Ministry of Transport and Communications has published a new environmental strategy for transport to promote sustainable and technically advanced transport. The key means to this end are not only low-emission vehicle technologies and alternative fuels but also changes in the way the citizens use the various transport modes.
