The Ministry of Transport and Communications is requesting opinions on an assessment memorandum regarding regulatory and implementation options for a system to respond to location study requests. Opinions may be submitted until 24 January 2025.

13.11.2025 | The Government proposes that the President of the Republic approve amendments to the Act on Transport Services on 14 November 2025. These legislative amendments give municipalities and joint municipal and other regional authorities the option to arrange passenger rail services in their respective areas. The amended act will also provide for the grounds to be taken into account when making changes to the distribution of regional competence concerning local rail transport.

12.6.2025 | On 12 June 2025, the Government submitted a proposal to Parliament to amend the Act on Transport Services. The proposal would grant municipalities, joint municipal and other regional authorities the possibility to arrange passenger train services in their regions. It would also put in grounds to make changes to the regional competence on local rail transport.

30.10.2024 | The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has audited more than half of its Member States. The IMO Member State Audit Scheme (IMSAS) ensures that Member States fulfil their international obligations and develop their maritime administration. Finland's audit takes place between 28 October and 4 November 2024 in Helsinki.

16.11.2023 | On 16 November 2023, the Government submitted to Parliament a proposal to amend the Vessel Traffic Service Act, the Ship Safety Control Act and the Act on the Enforcement of a Fine.

17.2.2025 | The Ministry of Transport and Communications requests comments on the draft government proposal concerning the competent authorities in rail transport. Comments can be submitted until 14 March 2025.

7.12.2023 | On 7 December 2023, the Government appointed Jarkko Saarimäki, Master of Laws, to serve as Director General of the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency, Traficom, for the period from 20 December 2023 to 19 December 2028. 

18.3.2024 | According to the Government Programme of Prime Minister Petteri Orpo, competition in passenger rail transport services will be increased by enabling municipalities, joint municipal authorities and regions to arrange outsourced services. The Ministry of Transport and Communications has launched a legislative project to make the necessary changes in legislation.

22.11.2018 | The organisation of the administrative branch of the Ministry of Transport and Communications will change at the beginning of 2019. The Finnish Transport Safety Agency, Trafi; Communications Regulatory Authority and certain functions of the Transport Agency will merge into a new Transport and Communications Agency (Traficom). The current Transport Agency will continue as Transport Infrastructure Agency.

24.5.2024 | The Ministry of Transport and Communications requests comments on a memorandum assessing necessary changes to the legislation on taxi operations to rectify the shortcomings. Comments on the memorandum can be submitted until 21 June 2024.
