Three new state majority-owned companies begin operating
On 1 January 2010 three new state-owned limited liability companies began operating in the administrative domain of the Ministry of Transport and Communications: Finavia Corporation, Arctia Shipping Ltd and Meritaito Ltd.
Finavia Corporation's duties are to maintain and develop the state network of airports and Finland's air navigation system to meet the needs of civil and military aviation, and to provide air navigation services in Finland. Finavia Corporation is a company set up to manage the operations of the former Finnish Civil Aviation Administration Finavia.
Arctia Shipping Ltd provides icebreaking services, special services using multipurpose vessels, ferry services and other activities serving waterborne traffic in Finland and abroad. The company also engages in vessel management and chartering in Finland and abroad. Arctia Shipping Ltd is a limited liability company set up to manage the operations of the former State Shipping Enterprise.
Meritaito Ltd's duties consist of waterway management; use and maintenance of canals; duties related to prevention and combat of environmental damage; hydraulic engineering; planning and specialist services; hydrographic surveys; and other duties related to waterways and hydraulic engineering. The company's duties were previously undertaken by the production operations of the former Finnish Maritime Administration and the fairway service business of the former State Shipping Enterprise.
