Press release

The renovation work at the Eteläesplanadi 16 premises of the Ministry of Transport and Communications has been completed. After the return to Eteläesplanadi 16, all functions of the Ministry will be located in two properties on Eteläesplanadi, numbers 16 and 18. The postal address and telephone numbers of the Ministry will remain unchanged.

The renovation work on the premises in Eteläesplanadi 16 began in October 2009. The building has now been updated for modern office use and restored to its original style and splendour. The starting point for the renovation work was to preserve the historical features and original materials of the building.

The Art Nouveau building located on Eteläesplanadi was originally designed by architect Lars Sonck for the Mortgage Society of Finland. The building, completed in 1909, is one of Sonck's main works. The building has been in state ownership since 1939, after which it has housed the premises of the Social Insurance Institution of Finland, the Board of Education and now the Ministry of Transport and Communications. The building has undergone several stages of alteration and expansion. In 1980 it was added to the government's list of protected buildings.
