International Civil Aviation Organization to discuss sustainable aviation fuels
A high-level conference of the International Civil Aviation Organization, ICAO, will discuss the organisation's vision for cleaner sources of energy, including sustainable and low-carbon aviation fuels, on 20–24 November 2023 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
ICAO aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. The most important means to reduce emissions is the transition from fossil fuels to cleaner alternatives.
The goal of Finland and other European countries is that the conference decide on targets for promoting the deployment and production of sustainable aviation fuels. Improving the availability of sustainable fuels in aviation calls for substantial investments globally. The growing demand for sustainable aviation fuels provides significant opportunities for the domestic energy sector.
International targets for increasing sustainable aviation fuels, low-carbon aviation fuels and other cleaner energy sources by 2050 would lead to a more level playing field. The EU has already agreed on measures to increase sustainable aviation fuels in air transport. The so-called ReFuel Aviation Regulation obliges fuel suppliers in the EU to supply sustainable fuels at airports.
Next steps
The Council of ICAO will discuss the results of the high-level conference and prepare them for the ICAO Assembly in autumn 2025.
