3.7.2023 | The Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) is meeting in London from 3–7 July 2023. The 80th session of the MEPC is expected to adopt a revised IMO greenhouse gas strategy. The meeting will also discuss global solutions for reducing greenhouse gas emissions from ships and the regulation of ships’ energy efficiency and ballast water management.

The Government proposes additional funding of EUR 23.2 million to the administrative branch of the Ministry of Transport and Communications to support the operation of cargo and passenger shipping companies.

10.11.2021 | Finland participates in six transport initiatives adopted at the Glasgow Climate Change Conference. Countries make commitments to reduce emissions on the road, at sea and in the air. Most of these declarations were published on the Transport Day on 10 November 2021.

27.2.2024 | Secretary-General of International Maritime Organization Arsenio Antonio Domínguez Velasco will visit Finland from 27 February to 2 March 2024. Secretary-General Domínguez will meet Prime Minister Petteri Orpo, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transport and Communications Minna Kivimäki and Director General of the Transport and Communications Agency Traficom Jarkko Saarimäki.

10.10.2025 | Finland and the United States have signed a memorandum of understanding on icebreaker cooperation. Finnish President Alexander Stubb and US President Donald Trump signed the memorandum of understanding at their meeting in Washington on 9 October. Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo also attended the meeting. This memorandum of understanding lays the foundation for commercial agreements between the United States Coast Guard and Finnish companies.

21.2.2019 | The European Commission has submitted a proposal for a Regulation that will harmonise the EU's collection of data on carbon dioxide emissions from shipping with the global system. The Government submitted its communication concerning the Regulation to Parliament on 21 February 2019.

12.3.2014 | The Finnish Ministry of Transport and Communications has allocated a total of 12.6 million euros in government aid to eight shipping companies and their 45 vessels to be used on investments that improve the level of environmental protection. The subsidies are intended to cover the investment costs arising from retrofitting vessels with new devices and modified fuel systems.
