    13.6.2024 | The State and the shareholder municipalities of West Railway Ltd – Turku, Espoo, Salo, Lohja, Vihti and Kirkkonummi – have been negotiating on the terms and conditions of the pre-agreement which will enable the transition to the construction phase of the West Railway. Helsinki, which was involved in the planning phase of the project, will not take part in funding the construction phase.

  4. Finland joins international convention on compensation for damage due to carriage of hazardous substances by sea - Ministry of Transport and Communications

    30.6.2026 | On 30 June 2026, Finland deposited its instrument of accession to the International Convention on Liability and Compensation for Damage in Connection with the Carriage of Hazardous and Noxious Substances by Sea (HNS Convention). The Convention strengthens the right of injured parties to compensation for damage caused by the carriage of hazardous and noxious substances by sea and complements the international maritime liability and compensation regime.

Kokouksessa käsiteltiin erityisesti tarvetta suojella kauppamerenkulun vapautta sekä merenkulkijoita. Lisäksi istunnossa päätettiin useista IMO:n hallintoon ja strategiseen kehittämiseen liittyvistä kysymyksistä.

Vid sessionen fattades dessutom beslut om flera frågor som gäller Internationella sjöfartsorganisationens förvaltning och strategiska utveckling.

    30.6.2026 | Suomi on tallettanut liittymiskirjansa vaarallisten ja haitallisten aineiden merikuljetuksiin liittyvää vastuuta ja vahingonkorvausta koskevaan HNS-yleissopimukseen 30.6.2026. Yleissopimus vahvistaa vahingonkärsijöiden oikeutta korvauksiin vaarallisten aineiden merikuljetuksista aiheutuvista vahingoista ja täydentää kansainvälistä merenkulun vastuu- ja korvausjärjestelmää.

    30.6.2026 | Finland har den 30 juni 2026 deponerat sitt anslutningsinstrument i fråga om HNS-konventionen om ansvar och ersättning för skada i samband med sjötransport av farliga och skadliga ämnen. Konventionen stärker de skadelidandes rätt till ersättning för skada som orsakas av sjötransport av farliga ämnen och kompletterar det internationella ansvars- och ersättningssystemet för sjöfarten.

  14. International Maritime Organization to continue negotiating measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from ships - Ministry of Transport and Communications

    24.4.2026 | The Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) will meet in London from 27 April to 1 May 2026. IMO Member States are expected to decide the next steps in negotiations on reducing greenhouse gas emissions from shipping. Other topics to be discussed include specifications to the rules on the carbon intensity and energy efficiency of vessels, the regulation of ballast water and guidance on reducing underwater noise.
