Finland’s Ministry of Transport and Communications published a Joint Nordic Strategy for Transport System Preparedness on 11 March 2026. The strategy was handed over to the Nordic transport ministers in Rovaniemi where the ministers also issued a joint statement. As part of their meeting, the ministers will also visit the multinational Cold Response 26 military exercise in Lapland on 12 March 2026.

17.4.2020 | The Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom granted mobility management subsidies for 35 projects in different parts of Finland with an aim to support sustainable mobility and influence people's choice of modes of travel. 

17.3.2025 | Finland participates in an EU project that aims to set up a European Digital Infrastructure Consortium where the focus is on mobility and logistics. The Ministry of Transport and Communications will inform Parliament about the next steps and timetable towards the Consortium with a Europe communication on 17 March 2025. At the first stage Finland seeks an observer status in the Consortium proposed to be set up.

27.5.2025 | On 5 March 2025, the European Commission gave two Communications: one on an industrial action plan for the European automotive sector and one on the decarbonisation of corporate fleets. The Ministry of Transport and Communications informed the Parliament of Finland of the Action Plan for the automotive industry on 9 May 2025 and of the Communication on the decarbonisation of corporate fleets on 26 May 2025.

27.6.2018 | The Commission published the first and second mobility package targeting road traffic in 2017. They contained legislative initiatives on access to the road transport market, social issues, transport pricing and the monitoring and reporting of CO2 emissions from heavy goods vehicles.

27.9.2018 | A favourable environment for digitalisation and new business models is being created through the Act on Transport Services. Its key objective is the provision of customer-oriented transport services. An essential element in achieving the targets is the opening up of data.

19.12.2024 | Finland’s Central Government and other operators are applying for a total of approximately EUR 73.36 million in financial support for 11 transport projects from the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) for Transport. In addition, EU funding is being sought for the acquisition of a new icebreaker. The Ministerial Finance Committee decided in favour of the applications on 19 December 2024.

4.6.2025 | The EU Transport and Telecommunications Council will convene in Luxembourg from 5 to 6 June 2025. Minister of Transport and Communications Lulu Ranne will represent Finland at the meeting.

21.9.2023 | On 21 September 2023, the Government adopted a proposal for a decree amending certain decrees on the enforcement of social welfare legislation on road transport and on the division of labour between the authorities. The decrees will be updated to meet the requirements of the relevant EU Directive.

10.1.2020 | The preparation for Finland's first National Transport System Plan continues. The Ministry of Transport and Communications presented the draft objectives for the Plan at a seminar on 10 January 2020.

26.3.2020 | On 25 March 2020, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment appointed a joint ministerial working group to assess the need for entry into the country of employees working in essential sectors in the state of emergency caused by the coronavirus outbreak.

1.10.2020 | In its final report, the working group for a digital leap forward proposes that Finland's digitalisation development should focus more on the structures and services of digital society that intersect society at large and accelerate the use of data. The working group handed its report to Timo Harakka, Minister of Transport and Communications, on 1 October 2020.

30.11.2018 | Minister of Transport and Communications of Finland Anne Berner and Minister of Economic Affairs and Infrastructure of Estonia Kadri Simson met in Helsinki on 30 November 2018. The meeting was also be attended by Mayor of Helsinki Jan Vapaavuori and Deputy Mayor of Tallinn Andrei Novikov.
