The Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) met in London from 18 to 22 May 2026 for their 111th session.

The Ministry of Transport and Communications requests statements on the draft national programme on alternative transport fuels distribution infrastructure. Comments can be submitted until 8 September 2024.

On 13 November 2024, the Ministry of Transport and Communications published the national programme on the distribution infrastructure for alternative fuels. The programme, which was drawn up in broad-based cooperation with stakeholders, facilitates the implementation of EU regulation.

16.10.2025 | The Ministry of Transport and Communications is preparing a long-term investment programme, based on the Government Programme, to renew Finland’s icebreaking fleet. In addition, Sanna Ruuskanen, Director of Unit at the Ministry of Transport and Communications, will be appointed as a new member of the Board of Directors of Arctia Ltd, Finland’s state-owned icebreaking company.

27.6.2025 | The Ministry of Transport and Communications is inviting comments on a draft government proposal for a new act on scrapping premiums for passenger cars for the years 2026–2027. The deadline for submitting comments is 5 August 2025.

11.3.2026 | Finland’s Ministry of Transport and Communications published a Joint Nordic Strategy for Transport System Preparedness on 11 March 2026. The strategy was handed over to the Nordic transport ministers in Rovaniemi where the ministers also issued a joint statement. As part of their meeting, the ministers will also visit the multinational Cold Response 26 military exercise in Lapland on 12 March 2026.

27.11.2025 | On 27 November 2025, the Government proposed approval of a fixed-term act on scrapping premiums for passenger cars. The act will enter into force on 1 January 2026. Applications for a scrapping premium may be submitted to the Transport and Communications Agency Traficom after the entry into force of the proposed act.

22.9.2025 | On 22 September 2025, the Government submitted to Parliament a legislative proposal concerning a fixed-term scrapping premium for passenger cars. Scrapping premiums could be applied for concerning the period 1 October 2025–31 December 2027. Applications could be submitted when the act is in force. The act is proposed to enter into force on 1 January 2026.

3.12.2025 | The EU Transport and Telecommunications Council will meet in Brussels on 4 and 5 December 2025. Minister of Transport and Communications Lulu Ranne will represent Finland at the meeting.

13.5.2025 | Transport ministers of Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden and Denmark will meet on 13–14 May 2025 in Helsinki. They will issue a joint statement on military mobility and security of supply.

28.4.2025 | On 21 February 2025, the European Commission and the EU High Representative issued a Joint Communication on an EU Action Plan on Cable Security concerning submarine cables. The Ministry of Transport and Communications will inform Parliament of the action plan on 25 april 2025.

21.3.2025 | Minister of Transport and Communications Lulu Ranne attended the European Shipping Summit seminar in Brussels on 20 March 2025. The seminar brought together European and international decision-makers, authorities and actors in the shipping industry.

14.2.2025 | Finland and Sweden will strengthen their cooperation in renewing their icebreaker fleets and ensuring operational coordination. This was decided when the Governments of Finland and Sweden met in September 2024.

15.7.2025 | The Council of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) met for its 134th session in London on 7–11 July 2025. Finland has been a member of the Council during the current term 2024–2025.

17.12.2024 | Finland is actively involved in international efforts to keep shipping and the marine environment safe in the Baltic Sea.

19.12.2024 | Finland’s Central Government and other operators are applying for a total of approximately EUR 73.36 million in financial support for 11 transport projects from the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) for Transport. In addition, EU funding is being sought for the acquisition of a new icebreaker. The Ministerial Finance Committee decided in favour of the applications on 19 December 2024.

16.5.2024 | The Ministry of Transport and Communications has published its third sustainability report. It contains information on the measures taken by the Ministry to promote the achievement of the UN’s Agenda 2030 Sustainable Development Goals in 2023. 

26.10.2017 | The Government proposes a fixed-term act on scrapping incentive scheme for passenger cars and support for purchasing electric cars or converting gas and ethanol cars. According to the proposal a private person could be provided compensation through the scrapping incentive or acquisition support for acquiring a new, lower-emission car or for converting an old car into a gas or ethanol-powered vehicle.
