28.7.2022 | Finland ranked first in the European Union’s digital performance comparison. The European Commission’s annual Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI) monitors the digital performance of EU Member States and tracks their progress in digitalisation. Finland has been at the top of the list for several years, ranking number two in 2021 and number one in 2019 and 2020.

19.12.2024 | The President of the Republic approved the amendment to the Act on the State Television and Radio Fund on 29 December 2024. It is to enter into force on 1 January 2025. The amendment will freeze the annual index increases to funding of the Finnish Broadcasting Company, YLE. The amendment implements the policies of the parliamentary YLE working group.

7.9.2023 | On 7 September 2023, the Government submitted to Parliament a Union communication concerning the European Commission's proposal for a regulation on harmonising the accounting of green-house gas emissions of transport services. 

20.12.2022 | On 20 December 2022, the Government submitted to Parliament a Union communication regarding the Commission's proposal on the so-called Euro 7 emission standards. The emissions standards apply to vehicle emissions such as carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, particles and nitrogen oxides, which are detrimental to health. The proposal is aimed at reducing the air pollution caused by new motor vehicles sold in the EU. The Government is mainly in favour of the proposal.

A legislative project decision was also issued with a view to amending the provisions of the Information Society Code (917/2014) governing the must carry obligation for radio programming.

On 27 October 2020, the working group appointed to prepare a roadmap for fossil-free transport will publish its recommendations on how to achieve this goal efficiently and fairly. Aalto University, for its part, will present the results of a study dealing with the impacts of the emissions trading system on income distribution.

6.10.2020 | The impact assessments commissioned by the Ministry of Transport and Communications on the effectiveness of measures to reduce emissions from transport, and their costs to the state, have been completed. The impact assessments are used in the preparation of a roadmap for fossil-free transport and in the related knowledge-based decision-making.

5.4.2019 | The new East Railway would improve transport connections in Eastern and Southern Finland and from Helsinki to Saint Petersburg. It would both shorten the route and reduce the travel time between Helsinki and Kouvola. The East Railway would be a significant new connection from Eastern Finland via Kouvola and Porvoo to Helsinki Airport. However, reductions in travel times would be moderate in relation to investment costs.
