The Ministry of Transport and Communications is seeking comments on a Government draft on approving amendments to the Convention on Road Signs and Signals until 27 January 2026.

7.12.2023 | On 7 December 2023, the Government decided to amend the 2G network licence terms. Telecommunications operators will now be expected to maintain 2G technology until the end of 2029. Operators may then, if they so wish, adopt newer technologies in the frequency bands currently reserved for 2G technology.

1.6.2023 | The Ministry of Transport and Communications has invited comments on the assessment memorandum concerning passenger rail services in the 2030s. The consultation period ran from 3 April to 19 May 2023. The memorandum provides a knowledge base for making decisions on the organisation of passenger rail traffic in the 2030s. The Ministry has received 75 comments.

On 16 April 2026, the Government proposed that the amendments made to the international Convention on Road Signs and Signals be approved. The amendments will have only minor effects in Finland.

11.8.2025 | The Ministry of Transport and Communications proposes that EUR 3.78 billion be allocated to its administrative branch for 2026. This is about EUR 60 million less than in the 2025 Budget.

According to decisions made in 2014, the government shall withdraw its operations from the Helsinki-Malmi Airport by the end of 2016. 5.6.2014 | The task of maintaining the Boat Register will be transferred from the Local Register Offices to Finnish Transport Safety Agency Trafi as part of efforts to centralise the registers for various vehicles to a single agency. Trafi currently already manages the registers for most vehicles.

22.1.2025 | The Ministry of Transport and Communications requests comments on a draft government proposal that would amend the regulation concerning rail transport. The legislative amendments would enhance the safety and security of urban rail transport and give an extension of time to the forest and chemicals industries for procuring rolling stock that meets the EU requirements. The deadline for submitting comments is 5 March 2025.

In principle, the Government supports the proposal’s aim to promote road safety and reduce the negative environmental impacts of transport.

The security of communications networks is extensively regulated in the Act on Electronic Communications Services. Its provisions contain obligations to ensure that the security of communications networks is, above all, proactively safeguarded though retroactive measures may be used where necessary.

3.9.2024 | The 2025 budget proposal of Prime Minister Orpo's Government bolsters conditions for economic growth. Economic growth driven by the private sector will also serve to secure the financing base for central government finances. The fast-acting measures to curb indebtedness that were decided on due to the difficult situation in central government finances will move forward.
