A round table discussion on port safety and security took place on 11 December 2025 at the invitation of Minister of Transport and Communications Lulu Ranne and Minister of the Interior Mari Rantanen. The meeting focussed on the security situation in Finnish ports and how they might be impacted by changes taking place in the operating environment.

On 7 May 2026, the Government submitted for approval amendments to the Act on Transport Services, the Driving Licence Act, the Act on the Organisation of Driver Examinations and the Act on the Enforcement of a Fine. The amendments aim to improve the operating conditions for the transport sector. Most of the acts and the amended decree will enter into force on 15 May 2026.

The Ministry of Transport and Communications has launched a legislative project to improve the operating conditions for the transport sector. The aim of the project is to further specify the EU regulation concerning road cabotage and make the regulations easier to comply with and supervise. In addition, the project promotes the use of vehicles powered by alternative fuels with a total mass not exceeding 4,250 kg in goods transport.

On 5 March 2026, the Government submitted to Parliament a proposal to amend the Act on Transport Services, Driving Licence Act, Act on the Organisation of Driver Examinations and Act on the Enforcement of a Fine.

24.9.2024 | The Ministry of Transport and Communications has launched legislative projects to implement the policies of the parliamentary working group assessing the public service duties and funding of the Finnish Broadcasting Company, YLE. To increase the transparency of YLE’s operations and finances, the working group proposed in its report of 12 September 2024 cuts to YLE's funding and amendments to the YLE Act.

The transfer of ownership is a significant step in preparing for the competitive tendering of rail transport services.

28.3.2024 | The Ministry of Transport and Communications is requesting comments on a memorandum assessing legislative amendments required for road transport automation in Finland. Comments on the memorandum can be submitted until 17 May 2024.

11.6.2025 | At the seminar held on 11 June 2025, the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency presented the main results of a study on extending the standard track gauge commonly used in Europe to northern Finland. According to the study, extending the narrower track gauge to Finland will primarily benefit military mobility.

24.4.2025 | The Government has proposed that EUR 20 million be allocated in the General Govern-ment Fiscal Plan for 2026–2029 for a planning project to extend the European track gauge from Sweden to Finland.
