27.10.2025 | Tero Jokilehto, Senior Ministerial Adviser at the Finnish Ministry of Transport and Communications, has been elected chair of the Inland Surface Transport Group for the next three years. The Inland Surface Transport Group is a sub-group of the Transport Group, which is one of the planning groups under NATO’s Resilience Committee. 

24.4.2026 | The Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) will meet in London from 27 April to 1 May 2026. IMO Member States are expected to decide the next steps in negotiations on reducing greenhouse gas emissions from shipping. Other topics to be discussed include specifications to the rules on the carbon intensity and energy efficiency of vessels, the regulation of ballast water and guidance on reducing underwater noise.

The Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) will meet in London on 7–11 April 2025. The objective of the Committee’s 83rd session is to agree on legally binding measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from shipping. The reduction targets have been agreed on in the IMO’s greenhouse gas strategy.

15.4.2021 | The Government proposes amendments to the Water Traffic Act, particularly to the provisions on water traffic safety and supervision. The Government submitted its proposal to Parliament on 15 April 2021.

17.6.2021 | On 17 June 2021, the Government proposed that the President of the Republic approve the amendments adopted by Parliament to the Water Traffic Act. The amendments aim to specify the Act and facilitate the practical monitoring of its provisions.

On 16 April 2026, the Government proposed that the amendments made to the international Convention on Road Signs and Signals be approved. The amendments will have only minor effects in Finland.

1.6.2023 | The Ministry of Transport and Communications has invited comments on the assessment memorandum concerning passenger rail services in the 2030s. The consultation period ran from 3 April to 19 May 2023. The memorandum provides a knowledge base for making decisions on the organisation of passenger rail traffic in the 2030s. The Ministry has received 75 comments.

6.5.2021 | On 6 May 2021, the Government adopted a resolution confirming national measures and priorities for exerting influence internationally to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from maritime and inland waterway transport. The resolution draws on the work on the Roadmap for fossil-free transport.

4.4.2023 | The Ministry of Transport and Communications invites comments on the assessment memorandum concerning passenger rail services in the 2030s. The memorandum provides a knowledge base for making decisions on the organisation of passenger rail traffic in the 2030s. Comments on the memorandum may be submitted until 19 May 2023.

21.5.2021 | The Ministry of Transport and Communications has initiated a reform of the Vessel Traffic Service Act. The Act will be updated primarily due to changes in international regulation. Simultaneously, other necessary changes will also be made to the Act.
