24.4.2026 | The Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) will meet in London from 27 April to 1 May 2026. IMO Member States are expected to decide the next steps in negotiations on reducing greenhouse gas emissions from shipping. Other topics to be discussed include specifications to the rules on the carbon intensity and energy efficiency of vessels, the regulation of ballast water and guidance on reducing underwater noise.

On 12 February 2026, the Government submitted three communications concerning proposals included in the European Commission’s Automotive Package to Parliament. On 30 January 2026, the Government also submitted a Europe communication regarding the Commission’s proposal to amend the EU Regulation on the CO2 emissions standards for heavy-duty vehicles.

29.2.2024 | On 15 February 2024, the Member States, Parliament and Commission of the European Union reached a preliminary agreement on amendments to the Directive on Ship-Source Pollution and on the Introduction of Penalties for Infringements. The aim of the amendments is to improve the protection of the marine environment. On 28 February, the provisional agreement was discussed in the Permanent Representatives Committee of the Member States (Coreper).

The Ministry of Transport and Communications requests comments on the draft government proposal for revised Ship Safety Control Act. The new act would repeal the current Ship Safety Control Act and introduce national legislation implementing the ship safety control regulation of the European Union’s so-called Maritime Safety Package. Comments may be submitted until 24 April 2026.
