21.2.2019 | The European Commission has submitted a proposal for a Regulation that will harmonise the EU's collection of data on carbon dioxide emissions from shipping with the global system. The Government submitted its communication concerning the Regulation to Parliament on 21 February 2019.

27.11.2023 | On 20–24 November 2023, a high-level conference of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) convened in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and outlined the organisation's global vision for cleaner sources of energy, including sustainable and low-carbon aviation fuels. ICAO aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. 

17.10.2023 | At the Environment Council meeting on 16 October 2023, the Member States of the European Union adopted a general approach on CO2 emissions restrictions for new heavy-duty vehicles.

29.6.2023 | On 29 June 2023, the Government submitted to Parliament a Union communication on the Commission's proposal for a directive concerning the carbon dioxide emission classes of heavy-duty vehicles with trailers. The proposal aims to accelerate the reduction of emissions from heavy-duty vehicles and the achievement of the Union's climate policy objectives.

The working group preparing the climate and environment strategy for the ICT sector has brought together six themes to reduce the carbon and environmental footprint of the sector and to make full use of the benefits of digitalisation. Comments on the group's final report are invited nationally by 15 January 2021.

The most important objective was to promote Corsia, a scheme that obligates airlines to offset carbon dioxide emissions from international aviation. Corsia stands for Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation.

This requires that the subsidies and incentives outlined in the roadmap for fossil-free transport are implemented in full and that every aspect of the emissions reduction potential is realised as expected. 16.5.2023 | The second sustainability report of the Ministry of Transport and Communications emphasises sustainable infrastructure and mitigation of climate change. The three most effective projects in 2022 raised by the report were the national 12-year transport system plan, i.e. Transport 12, the Roadmap for Fossil-free Transport and Finland's Digital Compass.

The Commission published its proposal for amending the Regulation on CO2 performance standards for heavy-duty vehicles on 14 February 2023. The Regulation will lead the industry towards the manufacture and sale of zero-emission vehicles, i.e. fully electric and hydrogen vehicles.
