The Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) will meet in London from 2 to 6 December 2024. This will be the Committee’s 109th session.

Items on the agenda include finalisation and approval of Code amendments. In the meeting, the Committee will develop the target-oriented Code for Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS) and the safety regulatory framework for ships using new technology and alternative fuels to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The meeting will continue to discuss cybersecurity matters, for example the development of standards for ships and port facilities to reach the minimum level of cybersecurity.  In addition, measures to manage the Committee’s work load will be discussed. The Committee will also approve the decisions of the sub-committees within its competence and guide their work.

The Committee is currently preparing the target-oriented MASS Code. The aim is to promote the safety and introduction of automatic MASS ships. Later, mandatory regulations are to be drawn up on the basis of the regulations providing guidance.  The Committee stated in its previous meeting that the mandatory regulations take effect in 2032 at the earliest.

Finland will actively take part in all the working groups to be established at the meeting and will be involved in promoting the MASS Code, for example.
