The President of the Republic approved the amendments to the Aviation Act and certain related acts on Wednesday, 22 December 2021. After the amendments, the acts will be in line, for example, with the recent EU regulation.

The changes will enter into force on 31 December 2021. The objective of the amendments is to further improve safety in civil aviation.

The key changes concern the powers and roles of the aviation authorities and certain other aviation operators. Sanctioning in the aviation sector will also be specified, including the elements of causing a traffic hazard as set out in the Criminal Code of Finland.

With regard to unmanned aviation, the Aviation Act would give certain operators the right to monitor unauthorised unmanned aircraft systems in areas such as airport surroundings.
